Today was my husband’s birthday and so first thing this morning, I had Jake making him a card. He was hard at work while my husband was still sleeping when our of nowhere he said, “are we making him a cake?”
CRAP
“Well, I don’t have any cake mix” I said. “Maybe we can go to the store later and get one.”
Then my way too smart kid says “Mommy, maybe you can use the stuff in the cabinet to make one.”
RIGHT
CRAP AGAIN
So I used my handy dandy laptop, searched for “make a cake from scratch” and voila!
RECIPES! Including one for frosting and we had all the ingredients!
Jake was ecstatic. He mixed everything himself and picked out the colors and the decorations (yeah so they were leftovers from the kid’s birthdays…).

It was a little dry and heavy for cake but it had a GREAT flavor. And Jake was very proud of his cake!
Happy Birthday babe!

Such a sweet story. Even if the cake tasted horrible, I’m sure daddy would have loved it because Jake thought of it and decorated it.
Happy Birthday dad!
Awesome! I’d love it if you shared that recipe! =) Homemade is great… Shows lots of love! Love those decorations!
I used this recipe minus the shortening: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/yellow-cake-made-from-scratch/Detail.aspx (I can’t find the one I used but it was identical except it did not have shortening). In hindsight my mom said it would have been more moist had i used cake flour instead of all-purpose flour.
And here is the frosting recipe: http://www.ehow.com/how_5136685_make-frosting-scratch.html
I think the cake turned out great! I love homemade cakes much better then store brand. I think that is what makes birthdays special! Happy Birthday to your DH!
Awww he should be proud of that cake, it’s awesome! I bet daddy was pretty surprised.

Happy Belated Birthday to your hubby! On the green cake note I had to make one for my son’s 4th birthday. He wanted a Shrek cake.

That is cool that he wanted to make daddy a card and a cake. Homemade from the kids is always better then store bought in my mind.
