When my head explodes – blame plumbing, Part 3

What have I done to anger the mighty god of plumbing??  Is this house jinxed?  Is there a patron saint of plumbing?  I need to be making a sacrifice or something.  Oh, I was so smug the other night about our generator.  I should’a known…..

Two nights ago, I heard an odd sound of running water in the sink bowl next to the dishwasher.  I thought it was just the water going down the drain.  Last night, during a terrible snowstorm, we opened the cabinet, and discovered the p-trap has a two inch long gash in it.  The inside of the cabinet is soaked.  We can’t go get a new pipe, can’t run the dishwasher, and will have to wait until later in the morning (after the roads have been cleared) to go to the hardware store.  Frustrating, but I can live with it.  Thinking I could do this myself, I start looking at the pipe and it had rotted from the inside.  As I tried to unscrew the connections, the pipe just started falling apart.  For some reason, (well, we know the real reason) the p-trap is metal, while everything around it is pvc.  From past experience, I realize that this ‘easy’ job will somehow turn into a major event. Is this possible in any house other than mine?  At this point I put in my bi-monthly call to my favorite plumber Jason; he’ll be over as soon as he can.  You’re probably thinking “what’s the big deal?”

Suddenly, there’s a puddle of water on the floor behind the downstairs toilet.  It’s coming out from the wall.  The carpet in front of the washing machine is soaked; there is a large amount of water behind the washer and dryer.  Gahhhh!  Where is this coming from???  Long story short, Jason takes a quick look and it seems to be coming from underneath the washing machine. Whew – I can handle that. Upstairs, he quickly replaces the p-trap.  He told me that we are one of his customers that he feels sorry for (because we have so many plumbing problems due to Steve, the World’s Most Incompetent Plumber).  AND, he shoveled the walk in front of the garage door.  Is it any wonder that I like this guy so much?
