Why is it, that once I find something I like, inevitably, it is discontinued? Why? WHY???
I love breakfast cereal. All kinds, but especially the really junky, sugary stuff from childhood. Froot Loops, Lucky Charms, Golden Grahams, Alpha-Bits, and even Honey Smacks (I remember when they were Sugar Smacks – yes, Kim, I’m that old so keep your punk comments to yourself). As a responsible, modern (i.e. not Betty Draper) mom, though, I don’t feed these to my kids for breakfast. We’ll have them as snacks now and then, but we try to steer towards the healthier cereals with lots of fruit and natural fiber. I hate that manufacturers have made the sugary cereals “healthier”. Alpha-Bits are now inedible. Why? Why??? If I’m going to eat junk food, I want it to be full of sugar, lack vitamins and definitely not have any added fiber. There’s no such thing as healthy junk food, so don’t even try. That’s why you don’t eat a lot of it. Common sense.
Anyway, once I had kids, breakfast became more difficult. I could never seem to get through a bowl of cereal without it getting soggy. Yecccchhhhh. By the time Number 3 came along, I had given up on cereal as a breakfast choice. I started having Pillsbury’s Blueberry Waffles; they were pretty tasty and I could deal with everyone else’s ”emergencies” and still have an edible meal. Then it was discontinued. Why? Why???
Next up, I found Slim-Fast’s Chewy Granola Chocolate Chip Meal Bar. I actually lost some weight using the Slim-Fast program and these bars. They were great for two main reasons – again, the convenience and secondly, they kept me full until lunch. And, I liked them. They were good. A few months ago, though, they started to become scarce. I fear they have been discontinued. Why? Why???
This morning I tried a very yummy Slim-Fast Chocolate Peanut Caramel Meal Bar. By 9:15, I was starving and my vitamins were churning in my stomach. So, I’m thinking this is not going to work. The point of this fascinating, culinary exploration, is: What do you eat for breakfast that keeps you filled up?

I love Coco Wheats and it is very rare to find them any more. I HATE when this happens.
I like to flavor my oatmeal with a little honey or maple syrup, or a little brown sugar.
I, however, don’t know how to make the “real” stuff, either… I Googled “how do you make oatmeal?” – just for you, Kim – and came up with 4,630,000 answers… Instant is just as easy, and I don’t mind the extra cost… Just used boiling water and don’t make it in the microwave.
I eat a bowl of applesauce, then a bowl of Grape Nuts, then sometimes fat-free yogurt.
Fills me up to eat again at least 3 hours later when I have some more fruit.
That sounds good – although I think it would take me all morning to get through it! :>
I eat the instant oatmeal just about every morning. I wouldn’t know how to make a “old fashioned” bowl of oatmeal if my life depended on it!LOL If I don’t eat oatmeal, I’ll make some Cream of Wheat. I try to stay away from cold cereal though…I love it too much and it drives my blood sugar up!
Maybe Kim could look up how to make a bowl of old-fashioned oatmeal for you! I hear she’s had some success with eggs. ;>
Sugar Smacks!!!!!! I guess I am old, too. Loved them. And I am not the only one trying to figure out what happened to Alpha Bits!
I am a big fan of Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats. I even like them after they get soggy.
I was so sad when I had Alpha-Bits! Mini Wheats are good, maybe I’ll give those a try again.
A large bowl of oatmeal. (not instant) I do use quick cooking which I buy from the health food store. It is organic and only 99 cents per pound. Much cheaper than packaged oatmeal. I guess if you really want to curb hunger this would be very good but add a little protein along with it. Maybe an egg. That should work.
Hah, I was going to say, my Mom buys the oatmeal from the health food store too.
But it’s you.
LOL
She shouldn’t combine the eggs and the oatmeal. Bad ju-ju
How do you flavor the oatmeal?
