What does your baby eat? Gerber 2nd Foods Purees with DHA?

Gerber Purees with DHAMy daughter has had trouble eating since the first time she ever tried. Breast-feeding was a struggle from the get-go and she even started choking and turned blue a few times in her first couple of weeks after she was born. As the weeks passed, we still struggled with her feeding and although she was slowly gaining weight, nursing her took over an hour each time and I never got a break. On top of those struggles, she was screaming night and day and nothing would comfort her.

To make a long story short, it turned out she was allergic to a protein most often found in milk products but also in things like cereal and pasta as well, so much of what I was eating was passing on to her and making her sick. So she was put on a hypoallergenic, prescription formula and she has since improved with leaps and bounds. To read a more detailed version of this story, you can go here: Our Insurance is paying for baby formula.

So now, Abby is almost 11 months old (seriously?) and we have been trying to introduce “solids” to her for a couple of months now. We’ve been through the “1st Foods” of single ingredients like sweet potatos, pears, peas, apples and more. She LOVED them once she got the hang of the spoon. She would eat an entire container at one sitting. More recently we’ve moved on to the “2nd Foods” and even some finger food – the easily dissolving cereal type.

In general, about 90% of the baby food we buy is Gerber. They have a long standing reputation and honestly dominate the market in that area. We like the quality, the price and more recently I have really been excited about their organic products and those with added DHA. I try whenever possible to serve organics to my family because I believe that the more natural a product is, the better it is for our bodies. And DHA, which is naturally found in breast-milk has been shown to support brain and eye development, so a baby food with that added is something I am interested in feeding to Abby.

Recently I was offered an opportunity to try some of the new Gerber 2nd Foods Purees with DHA and also a couple of Gerber Organic baby foods as well.

Gerber sent us a wonderful gift crate filled with the following:

  • A box of Gerber Organic Brown Rice Cereal
  • (1) 2-pack of Gerber 2nd Foods Purees with DHA – Harvest Vegetables with Mixed Grains
  • (1) 2-pack of Gerber 2nd Foods Purees with DHA – Spring Vegetables with Brown Rice
  • (1) jar of Gerber Organic 2nd Foods Dinners – Chicken with Country Vegetables & Rice
  • (1) jar of Gerber 2nd Foods Dinners with DHA – Garden Vegetables with Whole Wheat Pasta
  • (1) jar of Gerber 2nd Foods Dinners with DHA – Macaroni & Cheese with Vegetables
  • (1) jar of Gerber 2nd Foods Dinners with DHA – Vegetable Risotto with Cheese

There was also a little 6 piece vegetable puzzle in the crate that Jake seems to adore even though the kid can do 100 piece puzzles in his sleep.

Here is a slide show of what we received:

And here is a shot of Abby enjoying the Gerber 2nd Foods Dinners with DHA – Garden Vegetables with Whole Wheat Pasta.

Abby eating

As you can see, as usual, she wore a lot of it while she was eating it. Right now, she actually prefers the finger foods over the baby food, although she did appear to enjoy the flavor of the Garden Vegetables. I think she likes to put the food in her mouth herself and she’s not quite ready to handle the spoon herself. I smelled (of course) the food and tried a little bit of it and it wasn’t half bad. I look forward to trying all the other flavors with Abby and taking more pictures of her in technicolor!

I received some additional information from Gerber so parents can feel confident they are feeding their baby the right foods:

The Cornucopia study that was referred to on your site is strictly discussing algae and fungal-based DHA/ARA being used in the production of organic foods (specifically organic infant formula). However, Gerber selectively uses DHA derived from tuna oil:http://www.gerber.com/Products/2nd_Foods_Purees_with_DHA.aspx# (please refer to the listed ingredients found in the product information tab).

Gerber’s DHA is surrounded with natural ingredients that break down in babies’ tummies, but not in their mouths, so they gets all the benefits of DHA without sacrificing taste. Below is more information about Gerber’s DHA:

*DHA provided by Gerber’s products is well within the levels FDA considers safe.

*The fish oil used in Gerber’s DHA ingredient is highly refined and is safe for babies to consume. Refinement includes filtering out all environmental contamination. Safety for this ingredient has been established through an FDA approved process.

*The oil used by Gerber comes from tuna that are caught in areas of the world that reduce the chance of exposure to environmental contaminants.

She is so cute! I love photos of messy babies (although real life ones are a different story).

Aw lol messy babies are fun..until you have to clean them. I’m sorry to hear about her feeding issues.

  4. I LOVE that picture of Miss Abby…must have been a yummy dinner!

    Cat,
I had no idea… we’ve always gone with the DHA. Even my daughter’s prescription formula came in a DHA version and the doctor recommended it. I thought it was a natural ingredient….

  6. Personally, I’ve chosen to avoid and foods with added DHA/ARA. I’ve read several scientific studies that show it has no added effect, and several that say it hasn’t been proven to not be harmful. There just hasn’t been enough research on this additive yet. I wish I still had the links to the research studies for you.

The nurses in my hospital even suggest mothers who do formula feed to not use ones with the DHA added because they’ve seen an increase in newborns with diarrhea that used it.

If you’re looking to read more about it, this is a study summary that has lots of information http://cornucopia.org/DHA/DHA_FullReport.pdf

That said, I do love the Gerber brand. Our daughter loved it when we didn’t have time to do our own baby foods, but we stuck with the original formula.

  7. That is the cutest picture of Abby covered in Gerber puree!

She is saying “Give me more deliciousness!”
