Too much information?

As I posted “my” picture as Miss Congeniality, I was faced with the question of putting too much information about myself out there on my blog. Specifically, my last name. I had never been forthcoming about that information until I was selected as a judge for Playtex’s Smelly Tales contest. They wanted my last name and it is shown publicly for all the world to know.

It bugged me at first, but now I realize that so many bloggers and just people in general spread their names across the web. Also, I look at celebrities. I mean, we know their names, their children’s names, and often where they live. We also know more personal stuff about them like who they are dating and where they went for drug treatment and rehab.

So what do you think? Do you have concerns about sharing too much information on the web?

I am fine w/ using my first name, but I have never used my last name online. When I started blogging I decided to not use my kids’ real names, partly for fear of predators out there and also for their privacy, especially as they get older. I try not to post anything that I think they’d be too embarrassed about as they get older, but still. I also don’t post about our location, same reasons, although I have mentioned places we used to live.

@Sarah – that would have totally freaked me out!

    Val,
That’s a good point! I have the privacy thing on this domain, but still I know people have found my name and phone number on the internet even though I am unlisted in the local phone book.

Kaycee, I know what you mean, it is getting easier to accept my name being out there, but I don’t want to forget about the risk either. Hopefully we are all worried over nothing!
