Or, when My Head Explodes – Blame Plumbing, Part 2
When Michael says this, I’m usually in trouble. Big trouble. Huge trouble. My day was going pretty great. Madeline and I had made playdough from scratch (even put in holiday scents!); and the three of us had been playing with it. I sent the kids to wash their hands. In a couple of minutes, Madeline came to tell me that Michael had pushed her off the stool, so she was going into another bathroom. I naively continued to clean up. Pretty soon, “Hey Mom, look! Look at the sink!” Again, naively, I walked (not ran) to the bathroom. Well, you’d be surprised at how much water is on the floor when you turn the faucets on full blast and plug the drain for a couple of minutes.
Fortunately, our bathroom is not level, so the water only went in one direction. Again, fortunately, that direction was over the drop in ceiling in the basement, rather than the drywall finished section. Whew. And, finally, fortunately, the throw rug absorbed a huge percentage of the water. It was so heavy, I had a hard time dragging it over to the shower. So, that’s the good news. The bad news? Not so bad. I opened the top drawer of the vanity, and it was completely filled with water. That was pretty surreal. It overflowed into the drawer below that was filled with hair accessories. Which, needed to be sorted anyway, but I hadn’t planned on doing it today. The doors of the vanity are a little swollen and stick when you close them. The water that leaked downstairs soaked the ceiling tile, so I have another nice stain up there. Eventually, it started to drip into the laundry room. So, not too bad. It took an entire laundry load of towels to mop the floor.
All I can say is — Boys.

Except the floor drain. There will be a floor drain in the case of a kid who has a “blow-out” and needs to be hosed down!
Don’t forget to run the stainless steel up the wall as a cove base, and seal every possible floor opening.
2 words….stainless steel…
Any future bathrooms I design will be 100% stainless so even if this happens, it won’t wreck anything.
