The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice – review and DVD GIVEAWAY

In 2004, TNT premiered a movie called The Librarian: Quest for the Spear. It was followed up in 2006 by The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mines.

In the movies, Noah Wyle plays Flynn Carsen, who has unwittingly become the unlikely guardian of all of history’s treasures while taking on a new job as a librarian at the New York Metropolitan Library. He is a bookworm with something like 22 degrees and his job takes him on some wild adventures to protect the treasures he guards.

I had actually seen the first movie when it first premiered and was a fan from the beginning. I watched Noah Wyle in er for so many years and I always liked him and I love adventure style movies with a sense of history like Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider and National Treasure, especially those with sequels.

For me, The Librarian movies satisfy my craving for history, adventure and likable characters and the best thing is that they were made for TV, so I got to see them for the first time free, at the same time everyone else did. We don’t go to movies very much so I am usually the last person on earth to see good movies!

On December 7, 2008 TNT is going to premiere the third and final adventure in The Librarian series called, The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice. In it, Noah Wyle reprises his role as Flynn Carsen, Bob Newhart is back as Judsen, and Jane Curtain returns as Charlene. New to the cast for this third installment is Bruce Davison and Stana Katic.

THE LIBRARIAN: CURSE OF THE JUDAS CHALICE was directed by Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation), who also directed the second Librarian installment, The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mines. The story opens with the kidnapping of Professor Lazlo (Davison), a brilliant language and history expert at the University of Bucharest. Elderly and using a crutch to walk, he is taken hostage by a group that wants to force him to locate the Judas Chalice. They hope to use the cup – which was made from the 30 pieces of silver Judas received for betraying Jesus – to bring the notorious Prince Vlad Dracul back to life and foist evil on the world.

Meanwhile, Flynn heads to New Orleans for what he hopes will be a vacation. He has been summoned through mysterious dreams by Simone Renoir (Katic), a gorgeous New Orleans jazz club singer. She has made it her mission to keep the location of the Judas Chalice a secret so it won’t fall into the wrong hands. When the secret is accidentally revealed and the cup taken, Flynn and Simone must do everything in their power to prevent Vlad Dracul from casting the entire world into shadow. Helping from the sidelines are Judson (Newhart), the enigmatic and always surprising head of the Library, and Charlene (Curtin), the extremely serious-minded, no-nonsense personnel director.

Overall this is a great series of adventure movies! They are more family friendly because they were made for television and therefore have more restrictions on language, violence and adult content. The history is really interesting, even though it is not all factual, the intrigue that the historical fiction combined with an adventure story brings is a lot of fun.
