The Karate Kid, a remake?

As my son and I were watching my beloved DVD of The Karate Kid (his first foray into Karate movies, not likely his last), I Twittered that we were watching it together and @crazymommie responded that there is going to be a remake.

I didn’t believe her.  Ok, it’s not that I didn’t believe her, I just had to see for myself.

Sure enough, there is a remake in the works with Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.

I’m on the fence….this was the movie that inspired me (along with Miss Piggy) in my martial arts career, so a remake seems rather disrespectful.

But it looks like a fun movie (how can you go wrong with Jackie Chan), even though I cringed at some of the “similarities” although the last bit in the trailer is HYSTERICAL.

  1. I haven’t seen the original The Karate Kid. I guess I am sheltered :)

  2. Rhea says:

I saw this trailer the other day and was SO FREAKING EXCITED! I can’t wait. I posted about it on momdot to see what others thought and was surprised that most were not excited about it like me. I guess we’ll see.

  3. Emilie says:

The difference at least with this remake is that it appears they are trying to do everything the same which helps. I’m curious now…

  4. Angela H. says:

I showed this to my husband (who loves the original) and he got really excited about this one. And he was being serious.

  5. I’m hoping for the best on this one, I like Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith is really turning into quite a good young actor.
But, as you are all saying… why mess with the original?

  6. Angela H. says:

“The Next Karate Kid” WASN’T that good, so you didn’t miss anything there. :) I only saw it because it was on t.v. one time and there was nothing else to watch. Like you, I’m kind of on the fence on this one. On one hand, I love the original…but on the other hand, the karate moves in this one look pretty cool! I have a feeling it won’t be very good (for me) because I’ll keep comparing it to the original.

  7. Brie H says:

yeah… I am not feeling that – and I like Jackie Chan

  8. ugh! I wish Hollywood would quit trying to remake movies and TV shows from the 80s (hello, Knight Rider!). part of what made them great was the cheese factor…you can’t recapture that.

  9. Amanda says:

I’ve found remakes are either really good or really bad. There doesn’t seem to be much middle ground. I just can’t see this one as being really good.

    • Kim says:

I hear ya… I’m trying to hope for the best, expect the worst.

They should bring Daniel back and have HIM be the teacher. Like Rocky…even though he’s ancient they did another movie.

  10. I’m not diggin it. Jackie Chan had his moments in Rush Hour, but come on, replacing Mr. Miyagi? No way!

    • Kim says:

I’m trying to be optimistic…but I tend to agree with you. Although ‘The Next Karate Kid’ with Hilary Swank wasn’t supposed to be that good. I never saw it. It felt “wrong” LOL.
