Super WHY! is a TV show for kids that airs on PBS Kids. It is geared towards preschool kids ages 3-6 to teach them the skills they need to not only learn to read, but to learn to love to read.
Each episode involves 4 characters inspired from your favorite children’s literature: Red, from Little Red Riding Hood; Pig from The Three Little Pigs, Princess from The Princess and The Pea, and Whyatt, the curious younger brother of Jack from Jack and The Beanstalk. During the episode, one of the characters is faced with a problem, usually involving one of the other characters (similar to real life social problems a preschooler may encounter). In the course of solving the problem, the 4 kids become literacy powered super heroes called “Super Readers” and they literally fly into books to see how famous fictional characters would have handled similar situations. The Super Readers then solve puzzle and complete activities that help them solve the problem and overcome the obstacle.
My kids had watched Super WHY! once or twice so when I was contacted about the new line of toys from Learning Curve centered around Super WHY! I knew they would really enjoy them, so I jumped at the chance to check them out.
We were sent 3 of the toys from the Super WHY! line.

The Princess Presto Role Playing Kit, the Super WHY! Action Figure and the Super WHY! Hovering Why Flyer.
The Princess Presto Role Playing Kit includes a cape, a jeweled tiara and an and electronic Magic Spelling Wand that lights up and says Princess Presto’s favorite phrases from the show. It is for ages 3 and up but since my only daughter is around 20 months, I let her play with it for awhile so that we could check it out and I didn’t have to “force” my son to play with a girls toy.
Below is a photo of Abby wearing the tiara and cape and playing with the wand. She LOVED having them on and is fascinated with the wand.

The toys seem durable and the role playing aspect of this toy is wonderful. As they watch Princess Presto on Super WHY!, they can play along, and trust me, they will want to.
Apparently even pink wasn’t enough to deter my son from playing along…. (I found him this way, I did not put him up to it).

The Super WHY! Action Figure has a spinning WHY! Writer, a detachable cape and a detachable handheld computer. The plastic figure helps make the show come to life and Jake really likes it.

The toy is for ages 3 and up, but I like how the size of it is designed for small hands. It is not a teeny-tiny action figure, it is big and sturdy and easy for small hands to manipulate and interact with.
The Super WHY! Hovering Why Flyer is a battery operated sound and motion toy. With the touch of a button, the flyer has sound effects, great phrases from the show and literally hovers above the floor. Below is a video I took showing how it hovers.
I was a little skeptical about this toy. When I first turned it on it I expected it to lift off the ground and “hover” but in reality the “hover” aspect of it has more to do with playing with it and how, like in the video, when it is pushed across the floor, it literally floats and goes across an entire room with just a small push. In the end, it is a great toy. Both kids love to push it across the floor back and forth to each other and it gets them moving and active pushing it across the floor.
If there is one show you will allow your kids to watch, I encourage you to consider Super WHY! It is educational and fun and has appeal for a wide range of ages, even for kids under 3. PBS really goes above and beyond to create a show that parents and teachers can feel good about letting kids watch and that kids not only enjoy, but learn from. Learning Curve has taken this great show and created fun, quality toys that enhance kids experience while watching the show and allows them to continue the Super WHY! adventure even when they are not watching it. Educational and interactive both the show and the toys help your kids expand their imagination and grow and learn through play.
