So, what is Blu-ray anyway?
It sounds like a fish.
All I knew about Blu-ray up until I started writing this post was that it had to do with movies and it made the cost of them almost double.
Definitely not a fish, but I still had no idea exactly what Blu-ray was.
So, I did some research.
Basically Blu-ray is HD for DVD’s. They are higher capacity and are read by a blue laser rather than a red laser like with traditional DVDs & CDs.
Disney’s Blu-ray Disc site explains Blu-ray as this:
Get ready to experience a whole new way of watching movies with friends and family. Blu-ray is a new high capacity disc format for DVD capable of storing and playing high-definition content in your home theater setup. Using advanced blue laser technology, a Blu-Ray Disc is densely layered and read by a thinner laser than standard DVDs. This means that a Blu-ray Disc can store over five times the amount of data than a standard DVD can. resulting in unsurpassed picture and audio quality.

In addition to great quality, Disney Blu-ray also offers the following:
- Interactivity like never before
- Integrated games
- Stunning bonus features
- Easy navigation
- Richer colors
- Pristine audio
- High definition sound for a realistic surround sound experience
- Compatibility – Blu-ray players will play traditional CDs & DVDs
- Durable – a special hard coat layer protects the discs from scratches and damage
- Also plays on Sony Playstation 3 consoles

For Disney, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the “one that started it all.” It was Walt Disney’s first ever full-length animated movie and has been enjoyed for generations since it’s release in 1937. It is a memorable film with beloved characters that is timeless. So it is only fitting that Disney release this masterpiece on Blu-ray Disc!
Starting today, October 6, 2009, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is available on Blue-ray and better yet, the ‘Diamond Collection’ includes both the Blue-ray Disc and a traditional DVD. I don’t have a Blu-ray player but I have plans to get one in the near future. With this combo pack, I can enjoy the movie NOW on my regular DVD player but I also have a copy of it in Blu-ray for when I finally get a Blu-ray player.
What can I say about this classic film that you don’t already know? Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to work I go! Who doesn’t love all of the Seven Dwarfs, grumpy included? When I was a kid, kindergarten I think, I played Happy Dwarf in a school play. Since they don’t have “Sarcastic Dwarf” I guess it was a good fit.
As far as enjoying the movie, I love it and could watch it all the time because of the nostalgia it brings back. And experiencing it with my kids is such a wonderful way to build memories for them and bring back some of my own. My son at almost six was mildly interested, having seen it before and preferring humor and race cars over love stories. Abby enjoyed it in parts, mostly when she could see animals like when Snow White first discovers the Dwarf’s house. She goes CRAZY when the birds sing, she really loves that part.
In addition to the movie, the Blu-ray Disc contains some great extras!
- DisneyView – Expanded Viewing Experience
- Over four games for Disney family play
- Explore storyboards and hints at a sequel
- Explore Walt’s original studio
- Heigh-ho karaoke sing-along
- And more!
I really can’t wait to watch Snow White on a Blu-ray player, I wonder if Santa needs some gift ideas for me?
