Pepsi Max – what does MAX mean to you?
Meet Pepsi Max.
0 calories.
Cool can.
But what’s the catch?
I don’t generally drink soda but recently had a craving and bought a 24 pack of Pepsi Max. I was mostly interested in the 0 calories and frankly the black packaging was more appealing that the traditional Diet Pepsi. I examined the box to try and figure out why is was different, but came up empty. I bought it anyway figuring maybe the “MAX” stood for maximum flavor or something cool. An attractive new way to market diet soda.
Then the headaches started.
Bad headaches.
All day, made me want to do absolutely nothing but sit in the dark by myself, headaches.
So I wondered if the soda was to blame. Since I hardly ever drink soda, even though I was only drinking one a day with my lunch, maybe it was not sitting right with me.
So I stopped drinking it but also decided to search for what “MAX” really meant, and learned that it is actually infused with ginseng and has almost twice the caffeine as regular Diet Pepsi.
Yeah no wonder my head hurt.
It took about three days of not drinking it for the headaches to go away.
But the question is, why don’t they tell you that on the packaging? Sure, it does list the caffeine content in fine print with the nutritional information, but that only would send up a red flag if I happened to know what the normal caffeine content of regular Diet Pepsi was.
I know now…
Did you know about Pepsi Max? Did you know what the “MAX” stood for? Am I a bozo for not realizing it when I bought it?

I had no idea! Thanks for the heads up, I’ll have hubby steer clear of them.
No I didn’t know. But I’m glad I do now.
Hmmm, No I wonder if Coke Zero has a similar thing? My aunt drinks it all the time.
Wow! That is crazy! I always stay away from the new gimic sodas. They usually always had something bad to them.
I remember one commercial a long time ago when it first came out saying something about the ginseng & caffeine, but then never hearing about it again.
I forgot about it until reading your post. It would really bother me, too because I have severe migraines that are affected by the amount of caffeine I have.
Sorry to hear! I get headaches a lot so I feel ya! It’s funny though that you bought a 24 pack! Sorry but that sounds like something I would do!
Never even heard of that one! I gave you an award on my blog yesterday. Hope you are doing well Kim! :)
All it says is 0 carb, cal, sug. How are we supposed to know that it’s a double shot of caffeine? Especially those of us who don’t want much television…!
I watch TV but no commercials (thank you magic DVR).
I haven’t talked to anyone yet who knew…
Oh, sorry, I sounded a little angry. Guess I should add that my husband has a nut allergy (to every single kind) so I already have to read a LOT of labels looking for any trace or exposure to nuts. :)
Haha, that’s ok, I’m pretty angry too!
Wow, I guess MAX is supposed to compete with the wild caffeine-laced drinks aimed at teens and young adults (very, very bad). But I would not have known either. Kinda like when I bought G2 (gatorade) only to find out it had artificial sweeteners. Ugh! Most of them give me stomach pain so I had to throw it away. I’ve found other products too that say 1/3 less sugar but then in the ingredients they have added artificial sweetener. Like I have time to read 47 ingredients on every single product I buy!!
