Paper or plastic? The cloth diaper dilemma.

bumGeniusBoth of my kids have worn disposable diapers from the time they were born. I admit I never even considered cloth diapers with my my son, and with Abby I thought about it for about 5 minutes and the thought of having to clean a cloth diaper was just too much for me. I’m a rubber-glove, plastic gown wearing diaper changer. The quicker I can get rid of the mess, the better.

bumGeniusA couple of months ago, Cotton Babies sent me a sample of a cloth diaper by bumGenius. The bumGenius One Size cloth diaper is a single diaper that adjusts to fit babies from newborn to around 35 lbs.

I admit I was skeptical about using the diaper. The idea of not throwing out something that is filled with baby poop honestly made me a little queasy. But, I agreed to try it, so one day I got brave and put it on Abby.

And I was pleasantly surprised.

Abby was a bit intrigued with it at first and was pulling it on and trying to get it off, but after watching her crawl around in it for an hour, it really did fit her like a glove. The elastic around the legs was snug but not tight, I was able to get the perfect fit around her waist because of the stretchy tabs. While I admit to not waiting around for a poopy diaper (I still can’t believe I’ve written that word twice already), I did have to deal with a wet one before bed. I was amazed at how absorbent the liner was and how well it kept the wet away from her skin. I also found that overall Abby’s skin was less bothered by the bumGenius diaper than by the disposables. Surprisingly, disposables don’t bother her skin too badly, but with the bumGenius diaper it was even less.

So now, I am faced with my dilemma. I’m still NOT thrilled about how to clean up a poopy one (ok, that’s 3 times) but they fit well, grow with her, and keep her drier, plus they are much better for the environment and way less expensive in the long run. I definitely think I would stick with disposables when I go out (which isn’t often) but I could see using cloth when I am at home.

What do you think? Should I switch?

Thanks for your comment Sweetpeas, I appreciate input from someone with experience!

    Kristy,
I definitely think I would still use disposables when out and about!

  3. Kim says:

Thanks Summer, I had no idea they make those sprayers!

I used cloth with my twins, though w/ them, I did use disposables when I went out, mainly because I wanted to carry as little as possible since I was carrying 2 babies around. Now I’m looking forward to using cloth again, and plan to use cloth when we go out as well. I honestly found cloth diapers easy to wash, just knocked as much of the poop as possible into the toilet, and the rest washed out in the rinse cycle I run before washing.

I too am thinking of switching to cloth diapers because it’s just better for the environment…but I will always have disposables on hand for when we go out different places!

I love using cloth diapers! Cleaning them never has been a big deal to me. Honestly, you’re supposed to clean the poop out of the disposables ones too. I just flip it into the toilet and flush, then toss the dirty one into the pail and wash. They also make sprayers that attach to your toilet so you can spray the diaper clean over the toilet and flush, I think they’re about $20.

    Thanks for the input Lisa!
I like the idea of the flushable inserts!

  8. I made the switch and use those. You can buy inserts that flush down the toilet so that you don’t have to deal with poo. Get a good pail that has a lid to put the poo dipes in until you wash them, and you’re good.

I dont deal well with poo either, but these really rock. Get a couple, try them for a few days straight and see, just as you were pleasantly surprised trying this for however long she had it on, you’ll be amazed, it isn’t too bad.

Thanks Rhonda, that’s what I’m afraid of too! I’ll definitely keep you updated.

I always used disposable diapers. I could never bring myself to deal with a poopy cloth diaper. Let us know what you decide.
