How to keep your dishwasher from smelling like wet dog

We have a constant battle with our dishwasher.

There is rarely a time where everything is clean 100%

Sometimes all the cups are dirty inside.

Sometimes it doesn’t rinse fully.

Sometimes nothing on the bottom rack got clean.

Sometimes nothing on the top got clean.

Sometimes the silverware is still dirty.

I never, ever get to put ALL the dishes away.  There are always at least a few that go back to be re-cleaned.

One of the worst problems we have is that every once in awhile our dishwasher and all the GLASS items washed in it smells like wet dog.  How the heck does that happen?  I’m CLEANING my dishes.  With soap.  Yet they smell worse than they did before I washed them.

Well, it’s really a simple answer.

EGGS

If you have ANY egg residue on any of your dishes before you put them in the dishwasher, there is a good chance when you open your dishwasher after the cleaning cycle that it will smell like this:

The solution?

First, remove all the dirty dishes and run a clean cycle with Lemonade flavored Kool-Aid (only lemonade, not sure why) instead of your regular detergent.  Simply pour the contents of the packet into the detergent dispenser.  The citric acid does an amazing job cleaning your dishwasher and making it smell fresh.  Plus, it’s safe.

Then, from now on, clean egg residue off your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.

No more wet dog smell.

Cabbage Soup Diet Day 4 thru 7 – condensed but not like soup

So.

I made it 4 1/2 days on the cabbage soup diet.

I stopped for a couple of reasons, one being that I just wasn’t feeling right.  The other is that I found out last minute about a wedding we were invited to and frankly I want to enjoy it.

I lost a total of 5.4 lbs.

I cannot complain.

I didn’t make it to day 7, but I’m ok with that.  I have a renewed sense of focus when it comes to my diet.  My sweet cravings have been nullified and it gave me the kick start I needed to get my rear in gear to lose the last bit of weight I’ve been trying to lose.

I call that a success.

Thanks for following along!

Cabbage Soup Diet Day 4 – today is hump day which makes me want a donut

Today is the middle day of this craziness.  After today I will be more than halfway through the 7 day cabbage soup diet.

My brain is all for it, my stomach is calling me all sorts of 4 letter names.

In some ways I feel better, a testament to the fact that clean eating is better for our bodies.  But right now the protein content isn’t quite enough.  I’m a bit cranky 2-headed monster and tired a lot.  But even though it has been damp and rainy I have fewer aches and pains (partially attributed to the fish oil supplement, but not all).  I’m not all bloated like you can get when eating processed junk food, and I feel more hydrated because all the foods I am eating have a water content to them.

Yesterday was not bad.

Cabbage soup and as much fruits and veggies (no bananas or corn) as I could eat.

Today is bananas and skim milk which hopefully the milk will give me some of the protein I am craving.  Tomorrow is beef and tomatoes so I know I will get that protein soon!

Weigh-in:

Day 1: 159.2 (starting weight)

Day 2: 157.6 (-1.6 lbs)

Day 3: 155.8 (-1.8 lbs)

Day 4: 154.2 (-1.6 lbs)

Total loss so far = 5 lbs

The one thing I cannot explain is why the phrase “hump day” makes me want a donut.  Although right about now EVERYTHING looks like some sort of candy bar, ice cream or pizza.

Although I’d be happy with an egg and some dry oatmeal.  In fact, my body isn’t craving the sweets, it just want substance.  My brain is the thing dreaming about donuts and brownies.

Cabbage Soup Diet Day 3 – I want a cupcake

Yesterday was hell.

All veggies all day.

Until.

*insert loud theatrical introduction music here*

The potato.

I actually couldn’t find a single BIG potato as directed by the diet so I bought a bag of small ones and made two.

I GOT TO PUT BUTTER ON THEM.

BUTTER.

That sounds like DONUT after what I have been eating.

I couldn’t even eat both, I was so stuffed after 1, thought I did manage part of the 2nd one.

Day 3: 155.8 (-1.8 lbs)

Total loss so far = 3.4 lbs

The first time Trisha and I did this I had only lost 1.8 lbs at this point.  And I weighed more to begin with.  Trisha is down 2.8 lbs total which is not fair considering she has less overall weight to lose.

Today was ‘Grand Friends’ day at school and this past weekend we had gone shopping. Jake insisted he needed to wear a tie.  He ended up picking out his entire outfit himself.

It suits him I think.

Now he just needs a briefcase and a blue-tooth headset.
