Do you have a beard?
Since many, if not most, of you reading this are probably women, I would guess that you would answer “no” to that question.
..psst… If you are a woman and answered “yes” – they have products now that can help you.
But while many of us don’t have a beard in the traditional sense of the word, we do have a beard that falls under the following definition:
beard (bîrd) n.
One who serves to divert suspicion or attention from another.
It is called the internet. The world wide web. Online. Whatever you call it, a lot of people are wearing it as a beard when they log on.
Sometimes I think it is a positive thing for a lot of people, especially those with self-esteem issues or those who are painfully shy. They can log on and chat with people safely inside their comfort zone, make friends and maybe it will help them come out of their shell in real life. And even if it doesn’t, at least they have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships in online communities.
But a lot of people use the internet as a way to be someone they are not. Not only in the “I’m so much cooler online” sense, but also in the sense that they lose their inhibitions, do not think before they type and become totally unfiltered and uncensored. These people, who in real life would never criticize parenting skills, call people names or even think of voicing a dissenting opinion in front of a stranger are out there simply being mean.
There is no apparent accountability for these people. They sit behind their computers, somewhat anonymous because even if we know their real names, we do not know them, do not know where they live and really have no way to hold them responsible for their words. Calling them out publicly, at best stoops to their level and at worst brings them the attention they were looking for in the first place.
I believe in freedom of speech and I believe that it is something we should all stand up for, but I also think it is just as important to hold people responsible for their speech when it violates someone’s rights. We have bloggers being stalked and their friends and associates harassed simply because someone didn’t like something they wrote about. We have grieving parents being accused of neglect, judged and called names because they reached out for support in a way that people didn’t like.
We can’t let people get away with defaming someone’s character simply because they don’t like something they did or said. And we actually have laws to protect us against this very thing. It is called libel and if you write something that damages someone’s reputation you can get sued.
The internet makes it very easy to act first and think later, and more often than not, there are no repercussions for a person’s actions. Behind the veil of technology they are nameless, faceless and spineless. They can insult, judge, degrade, accuse, and harass with having to worry about looking anyone in the eye the next day. They can let it all hang out without fear of confrontation in “real” life.
That is not exercising freedom of speech, it’s simply being a coward.
Last Saturday we set out to see Santa and find our Christmas tree. We had plans to go to the middle school here for their Breakfast with Santa, and then go cut down our own tree.
As they say, plans are made to be broken.
We went to the middle school, paid our $12 ($3 each) and went into the Breakfast. It was packed! We were #109 to see Santa and they still hadn’t gotten through the first 60. They had all kinds of activities but it was not stroller friendly and there were no open seats. So we left $12 poorer and the kids didn’t get to see Santa. We stopped at Walgreens because they were having a free Santa picture but I couldn’t remember what day. It was on Sunday so we made plans to return there the next day.
We then drove…somewhere…with the intent to get a tree. We ended up at a local farm where we did not get to cut it down but we got a great tree.
Below are some photos from our weekend (I wish my camera took better pictures)…

Who needs a Christmas dress when you have a tree skirt?

Waiting to trim the tree while watching a Christmas show

Ummm that wasn't sticking out like that before...the tree grew an arm.

Jake really enjoyed hanging the ornaments...

...and Abby enjoyed unhanging them and playing with them.

Jake admiring his work.

You need a good rest after stealing ornaments.
Right about now is when all the lights on the tree went out and my husband had to eventually, completely revamp the way they were tied together because the fuses blew. In the meantime, though, our dog had another seizure, knocked a tooth loose and needed a bath because the seizure makes him lose control of..well, everything. At least it happened outside!

Seeing Santa at Walgreens (this one had a grumpy look about him)

My Christmas village...well, I'm not sure 3 buildings makes a village but oh well.

All the decorating is done.
So it wouldn’t be a Christmas to remember without a few hiccups, right?
My favorite thing to do in the evenings now after the kids go to bed is sit in the kitchen with my laptop looking out at the living room with only the tree lights on and listening to Christmas music.
How about you? How has your Christmas decorating been? Do you have a real or an artificial tree? Any Griswald moments yet for you?
While we celebrated his birthday last weekend, today is actually Jake’s birthday!
Here he is a couple of months old:

Where does the time go?

He is a control freak like his mother, more stubborn than both of us, and might actually be smarter than us too. He was reading by age 3 and can kick my butt in snowboarding and pretty much any other game on Playstation 2. We call him Captain Chaos…because, well, he is totally the captain of all things chaotic.
Happy birthday little man!
How does this:

Become this:

So darn fast?
Abby’s birthday was actually yesterday but I didn’t want her to have to share it with Thanksgiving, although we are certainly very thankful for her.
Apparently I am all messed up. TODAY is the 27th, so TODAY is her birthday. Nice….Mom of the year LOL!
She is my little ham, the one I call lady bug, who seems to have been born to make us laugh. She gives the best hugs and makes the best faces and every day I look forward to seeing what silly things she comes up with next.
