Old age and failing senses

hearAs it gets ever closer to my 36th birthday, and I get ever closer to 40 (seriously?) I have realized that I’m not quite as sharp as I used to be. I used to be able to hear a conversation from 2 rooms away, and see the TV from the couch without wearing glasses. While my sense of smell seems to grow even sharper with each passing day (hardly a gift when you have kids and a dog) my other senses are just not as good.

Lately I’ve been noticing that I can’t always make out things they say on TV even after rewinding it with the DVR about 14 times. Even with the volume turned up sometimes I just can’t make out what they are saying. I may have to resort to turning on the closed captioning on my TV, or getting a set of those amplifying hearing aids. Have you seen those commercials where they can hear conversations from like a block away? Hey, those would be fun just to have!

I use the closed captioning to catch the words I miss. The commercials are louder than the television program. I’m always turning the volume up and down.

  2. Renee says:

I can totally relate, I recently started getting concerned about my vision. I have always had better than 20/20 but the closer I get to 40 the more I worry about losing my sight and squinting at stuff!

    Marlene,

That has to be the funniest thing I read in a week and considering I read it at 3 am, it may have even been funnier than had I read it during the day.

The skin on my neck? Great now I’m going to be constantly touching my neck waiting for it to change….

  4. Kim says:

    Heather,

Too bad at 36 you don’t feel 25, not to mention looking 25….

  5. Kim says:

    Roses,
My son is so loud now he makes my ears hurt, you mean it will get worse?????

  6. Kim says:

    Mammadawg,
Hey our kids can be our scapegoats…that’s what they are there for. I’ve got about 2 weeks before I hit the back side of my 30′s….

  7. Marlene says:

I think that actors/actresses on television aren’t as clear as they used to be. Years ago, television reporters were all from California and spoke clearly. I’m glad we have a DVR because I don’t understand them half of the time.

One thing I did notice at age 36, that was different than being 35 is that the skin on my neck felt different. How’s your neck doing, Kim?

  8. Heather B. says:

Haha I can’t wait! And hey, 36 is the new 25! your doin great! Keep it up!

  9. Roses says:

The older your kids get, the less you are able to hear.
No, you don’t lose your hearing… the kids just get louder.

Your hearing will improve on nights they go on sleep-overs. :)

lol – I actually am the same way. I *have* to have CC on when I’m watching TV or else I won’t know what the heck they’re saying.

I say it’s because my monsters are so darn loud in the house, but the truth is…

Well, you already know what the truth is. ;)

So birthday girl, when is the big day?!?
