Michael Jackson dies at age 50

Thriller was epic and unforgettable, as was most of his illustrious career.  Some of it for its pure genius and some for being downright bizarre.  But whatever the reason, there is probably not a person on this planet who has never heard of Michael Jackson.

I just heard the announcement on my local news that he died today of cardiac arrest and that Farrah Fawcett lost her battle with cancer today as well.  Combined with Ed McMahon’s death the other day, the current celebrity death circle of three is complete.

I wish their families the best.

    I’m just really sad.

It was really sick to see the media swarming the family compound today. I don’t understand the draw in watching someone’s pain.

Thanks for this post! I have never been so affected by a celebrity death, maybe because my generation grew up on Michael Jackson records and I watched his career peak and take a nosedive after his many scandals. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. He was clearly in a lot of emotional pain as evidenced by the constant changes to his appearance (very self-destructive cosmetic surgeries, skin alterations). It is the end of an era…I hope he is at peace now.

I think there was something about him too, an innocence – because he started so young, that even through some of the moments in the media as an adult where people thought he was crazy, people still wanted to protect him.

I think many people who never really gave him a second thought other than having been a fan many years ago were stunned and saddened by the news.

I was just thinking about him the other day. I think they use one of the songs from the Jackson Five when he was a kid on a commercial. I thought what a cute kid he was and what a voice. Why did he change the way he looked?

    • Kim says:

He clearly had emotional or psychological issues surrounding the way he looked and with his status as an icon, plastic surgery and other things were easily within reach.

It always seemed so sad to me – he was such a cute kid and a handsome man before he did that stuff.

I agree with you 100% Kim. He was obviously trying to “cut away” or remove something. Some people think he saw his abusive father in the mirror and wanted to get rid of that image. I wish people would just realize that they can never understand what it’s like to live is a fishbowl from age 5, to have to world watch and judge your every behavior like they know you. He was an icon, bizzare and sometimes inappropriate, but he was also human.
