HAAN Duo Steam Sweeper & Floor Sanitizer – REVIEW

I began using a steam cleaner for my hard floors a few years ago after trying every single mop invention known to man.  I stumbled upon a steam mop online and ordered it.  I loved the idea that I can clean my floors without needing a chemical cleaner, just by using water and they actually get clean!  I’ve never looked back.

Until a few weeks ago when my steam mop decided to stop making steam.

Ironically, right around that same time I was introduced to a new product from HAAN called the Duo.  The Duo takes the steam mop to the next level and I was lucky enough to be able to try it.

A little about HAAN:

When Romi Haan, an educated Korean professional and homemaker, had the idea to create a steam cleaner to avoid the backbreaking work of cleaning her floors on her hands and knees, she never imagined she would be creating a consumer sensation.

Out of Romi’s persistence and determination, the HAAN® FS-20 Steam Cleaning Floor Sanitizer was born. First, earning 75% of market share in Korea, and next, taking the U.S. market by storm.

With a full range of steam products that are selling out on dozens of popular shopping web sites and channels and quickly gaining shelf space in some of the nation’s largest retailers, HAAN® is fast becoming a household name.

The HAAN Duo isn’t your ordinary steam cleaner.  It works on ALL your flooring types and the coolest thing is that you don’t need to sweep your floors before you clean them with the Duo.  It does it for you!

The HAAN® Duo™

Combining a powerful sweeper with the proven quality and performance of a HAAN® Steam Cleaning Floor Sanitizer, the HAAN® Duo™ Steam Sweeper & Sanitizer eliminates the need to use a broom or vacuum before steam cleaning.

Perfect for carpet, rugs, hardwood and other sealed hard-surface floors, the HAAN® Duo™ devours dry messes… steams away wet messes…and cleans up combination messes at the same time.

Removes odors and kills up to 99.9% of E. coli, Salmonella and other common household germs.

The Duo was easy to put together.  Pretty much snap the handle pieces into place and you are ready to go.  The instructions for use were a little bit confusing, but that’s because you have several different options for using the Duo – hard floor vs carpet.

Hard Floor use:

  • To use the Duo on a hard floor surface it requires what they call the “pad tray” included with the unit.  This tray snaps onto the steamer and then the microfiber pads that clean the floor simply press onto the tray.  Word of caution – make sure the tray snaps on all the way or you’ll end up with a bruised foot like I did when I picked the unit up and the tray fell off.  The microfiber pad is easy to put on and sticks well.
  • After you put the pad tray on (you do not place the microfiber pad on just yet) you place the steamer on the included black Floor Protector Resting Mat with the bumpy side up.  You then fill the water tank to the maximum level, and plug the steamer in.  Then, you press the grey “steam” button and wait for the tank cap to change from black to orange – this means it is heated and ready to go.
  • Place a microfiber pad on the floor loop side up, and press the unit onto the pad and start cleaning by moving the unit back and forth across the floor.  There is no pumping action required just use like you would a vacuum or mop.
  • If you want to use the sweeper function along with the steamer, simply press the grey sweeper button once the unit has heated up and then start cleaning.

Overall the steamer was easy to use and did a great job cleaning my hard floors.  I used both the sweeper and the steamer and honestly my floors have never felt cleaner.   The way the machine works is that the sweeper is at the front of the machine and picks up the dirt before you roll over the area with the steamer pad.  It really did work, picked up the loose dirt them cleaned the floor.  I did have some trouble in the corners, however, because the cleaning pad sits back from the front of the unit, you cannot actually reach the corner to steam it.  For edges, so long as you go in head on with the sweeper and then sideways for the steamer, you can reach most of them to clean along them.

Once you are done you need to empty the Sweeper Bin where the dirt collected.  This was fairly simple, although being that the entire unit was steamed up, the dirt was a bit wet and stuck to the bin.  Maybe I should have waited for it to dry before emptying it.

By the way, you can use the sweeper function without the steamer as well, to remove loose dirt for daily cleaning of your hard floors.

Carpet use:

  • To use the Duo on a carpet surface you do not need the pad tray and microfiber pad unless you want to spot clean.  The rest is basically the same as the hard floor instructions, just without the pad.
  • You prepare the unit as above, and them move it back and forth across the carpet to steam clean it.
  • Like on the hard floor, you can choose to use the sweeper to pick up loose dirt as you steam clean.
  • Also like the hard floor, you can just use the sweeper function on the carpet as well.
The Duo surprised me and did remove stains from my carpet.  We had a series of coffee stains in front of my husband’s office door and I used the Duo with the pad to clean them.  It got most of them up!  I thought it left the carpet a little stiff after wards, but I think that is the nature of using only steam.  The Duo is not a full blown carpet cleaner but as a sanitizer to keep your carpets free from odors and germs in between deep cleaning and for occasional spot cleaning, I think this unit is a real gem to have around the house.

Summary:

If you are looking for a simple machine to just steam your floors, the HAAN Duo is probably not for you.  It is a versatile machine that does much more than just steam clean hard surfaces.

The pros of this machine are: versatility – can be used on hard floors to steam clean or to sanitize carpet; long handle and cord; very effective on hard floors; kills germs; no need to sweep before cleaning your floors because of the built in vacuum.

The cons are: does not reach corners; might have more features than some people need or want;  the dirt gets soggy and cleaning the Sweeper Bin can be a bit tricky.

If you are looking for a machine that saves you time by sweeping and steam cleaning your floors at the same time, and also allows you to spot clean and kill germs on your carpets, the HAAN Duo just might be the cleaner for you.

You can purchase a HAAN Duo from Kohls.com, QVC, Macy’s or HAAN Direct.  The price ranges from $130 to $170.
