My wife and I are going to Outback tonight. One blooming onion is enough for two and I’ll buy her a drink myself.
Heck, we have date night once a week anyway.
I dont care if its a commercial opportunity for them, they dont Have to do anything. But they are.
Guess I’ll have to find my ID card, I’m pretty sure my uniform wont fit anymore (even if I still had it. circa 1961)

  2. Bill weldon says:

Well I’m going for the free meal and taking my wife with me.Very few things in life are free but this is no strings attached deal,it’s Honoring Veterans on Vetrans day in their own Community.I would like to thank Applebee’s for
    their appreciation towards Veterans.

  3. george ford says:

I am Veteran who serviced in Korea almost 60 ago. I am not fighting cancer. I have been married for 48 years…I could never feel right to dinning out ..without my loving wife…but thank you.

  4. Stephanie says:

I think it’s REALLY nice that Applebee’s is offering a full meal to any Veteran or currently enlisted Military Personnel –

    That’s healthier & filling,
and pardon me, but it’s not just a deep-fried gimmick to get them into the restaurant.

I’m not a Veteran (and I don’t own a restaurant) but I/we are deeply appreciative.

    • Howard Huff says:

Its nice that these establishments are offering free dinners to the veterans. But what about the wives? I am retired after 20 years in the Marines and my wife was with me all the time. Well except for the times I was over seas, training and other things. She was the one that had to stay behind and endure raising the kids, cooking, cleaning, paying the bills and working also. The military when I was in didnt pay all that good and it took two incomes. She would have to sit at nights and wonder what was going on with me while I was away. Why shouldnt she get a free meal also? I realize I served my country and fought for the freedom that we all so dearly love. But what about the person that was buy my side all this time I was gone and everything she did to keep the family together. She was part of the military also. Why shouldnt she be able to sit down and enjoy a free dinner with her husband also? Can anyone give me a logical answer????????

      • Jomama says:

Yes, they also serve who sit at home and wait.

      • Kim says:

        Howard,
As a Navy wife (my husband is retired – and a disabled vet) I totally appreciate your point, and I admit I thought the same thing….and figured I was just being selfish.

But, at least they do offer something….

      • Mike says:

My goodness Howard, can you not be more appreciative for the free meal they ARE giving you? This is costing Applebees a huge amount of money, promotion or not. Do you feel they should give the children of vets free meals too, and perhaps the parents? It wasn’t always easy for them either. Most of us military are appreciative of a typical 10% military discount, and you can look at this as a chance to take your wife out for dinner and get a 50% discount. As a retired USAF vet, I don’t expect these free meals….but I am glad and appreciative when they do come our way.

      • Roger says:

To all of my fellow veterans and soldiers who is complaining about why these very grateful establishments are not paying for the spouses also, are really making the rest of us apprecitive soldiers look bad here. Why don’t you re-direct that unthankful attitude towards those who have not lifted a fingure to do anything for us.

      • Roy says:

Yes my wife service as if she was a Marines herself.Hell at times it was more on her to be in the U.S.M.C..I didnt know how hard it was for her to the day I got out.Thank God for the Wifes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Bill weldon says:

Well it’s for Vets, not Vets and family, just vets. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

      • carla says:

We should be grateful that their are restaurants who are being so incredibly generous and are supportive of the troops, then and now. It is the military personnel who lay their lives on the line for their Country. It is not spouse appreciation day. I have proudly served for 15 years, and continue to serve; I do NOT expect to have my family eat for free. I will appreciate my meal and be grateful that I am currently home, alive, and able to enjoy a meal with my family.

      • Traci - Veteran says:

Veteran’s are the one’s who are giving their lives for their Country. Veteran’s are those serving in places that a homeless person wouldn’t even think about staying at or lying in. Veteran’s are the one’s who are called on at ANY TIME to do what they are told to do in a moments notice. I am a veteran and after I got out I continued on as a military wife so I have been on both sides of this. We’re absolutely LUCKY to be getting anything free at all for all of our sacrafices. Yes, the spouses made sacrifices too but they are the one’s who got to sleep in nice warm beds with air conditioning or heat when it was cold, got to eat as they pleased and the food didnt come out of a box, enjoyed the freedom of coming and going as they pleased, enjoyed seeing and spending time with their children every day, and I could go on and on. I would just like to say that I am so embarrassed that any Veteran or active duty member would even ask “why doesn’t my spouse get a free meal too?” Come back to reality here…we’re the one’s who really sacrificed and gave everything for our Country, not our spouses. But thank you spouses for helping to keep the finances in order, the children in line, and for the many letters and words of encouragement to keep us going and doing what we signed up for. It takes a strong spouse to hold down the fort when the military member is gone and a good 40% of them end in divorce, so I highly commend those who stayed with their spouse through tough times and were patient and DEFINATELY NOT SELFISH.

      • Chris says:

I am not in a military but I would offer to both mil/spouse/companion if I owned a restaurant. Even thought those of you decide it is not right to get a free meal for the spouse, but I think, the restaurant should be compassion/sensitive enough to offer to both. Thank you all.

  5. Lyzzie says:

At Outback Steakhouse all veterans and active duty military will recieve a free bloomin’ onion and beverage with proof of service on veterans day 2009.

  6. Fast Eddie says:

THANKS! I am a veteran and love that you are saying thanks to us in such a gracious way. We do it for the love of our Country and not for any other reason….We each have a piece in the world and some choose service….we are appreciative of yours on this day.
    SEMPER FIDELIS.
And to the vets from the Vietnam Era…..This meal is for you too. Stop in and enjoy a meal on Applebees and when you see a fellow vet, share your story and remember, we served in different times, but serve the same country!

  7. David C. Griffith says:

I think it is great, but do wonder where these and others were when my comrades and I returned from Vietnam where we lost over 60,000 brave men and women.

    • Stephanie says:

You’re right, but some of these restaurants might not have existed — Or the people running them are totally different, next generation.

Actually more restaurants should offer this – and I wish it were more than one day — but it’s a beginning, however very sadly late.

I’m sure at least some of these restauranteurs are thinking in those terms also, and not just for publicity.

  8. jakell meckley says:

wow really all of them? Maybe I will have to surprise my hubby and take him…its an hour drive but fun date night and we can go christmas shopping then too :)

    Thanks to all our troops!!!

    • Jomama says:

Christmas shopping too? That sounds like a double edge sword. Buy hubby dinner and take him home. Then go shopping by yourself.

  9. I think it is a wonderful thing they do for our troops!
    Thanks for letting everyone know.

  10. Awesome! Too bad we don’t have any of those in our dinky town. LOL
