FDA Peanut Butter Recalls

peanutSo do I just throw away any peanut butter products I have just to be safe? I’ve got a couple of jars of unopened peanut butter in the cabinet and a few other peanut butter containing products in the house as well. It seems like the list of recalls keeps expanding and I’d rather be safe than sorry. How does this happen? And why does it seem these kinds of food recalls are becoming more prevalent?

FDA

The FDA has a ton of information on these recalls. There are some major name brands that have recalled products and apparently it is not just people food. They are recalling some dog biscuits too.

The recall appears to be mainly in products containing peanut butter, not necessarily peanut butter itself because of Salmonella Typhimurium and they say that “Major national brands of jarred peanut butter found in grocery stores are not affected by the PCA recall,” but my concern is that they will be added to the list before too long.

How about you, do you or did you have any of the recalled products? Are you avoiding or disposing of all peanut butter products just to be safe?

I am definitely avoiding it too. One of our coworkers, a big, burly guy named Mike has been sick for the past 5 days from eating those little peanut butter crackers we stick in our kids lunchboxes. After 5 days of complete misery, Mike’s dr. pinpointed the cause as Salmonella from the crackers after they did some testing. If it could affect Mike like that, think about our little ones. I know I am not taking any chances.

I’m actually getting rid of any and all products that contain peanut butter just to be on the safe side. I agree with your fear of them adding more products to the list of recalls AFTER I’ve already eaten it so I’m just getting rid of everything. It’s so scary how more and more things like this are happening.

  4. What about generic or store brand jars? That’s all I buy and my kids love their peanut butter. I would hate to have to return it to the store. So far none of us have gotten sick.

I had two packages of the Austin peanut butter crackers. My boys enjoy them as a snack and we had eat them with chili just a few days before the recall. SCARY!!!

I wouldn’t throw anything away, but rather take them back to the store where I purchased them, and find out if you can ger your money back.
