Dollar General Christmas Stocking Challenge

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Dollar General for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

I always struggle with what to put in my kids stockings each year.  Traditional smaller items that you buy at department stores and even the “big box” stores are just not budget friendly.  Filling a stocking with fun items often ends up costing more than some of the bigger items on their Christmas lists when you total it all up.

It really has led me to reconsider stockings all together.

But how can I?

It’s a Christmas tradition!

Well this year, Dollar General challenged me to fill my kids stockings with only $25, that’s $12.50 apiece.

I admit I don’t shop much at Dollar General even though it is one of the stores we have here in our little town, so I was really interested in checking out what they had for stocking stuffers.

The main thing I noticed in every aisle were the yellow $1 and $2 signs and stickers.  They had a lot of stuff for $2 or less, and I was surprised at some of the stuff that was only marked $1, it would have been more at other stores.

The first thing I did was walk around the entire store to get a feel for what they had.  They had an aisle full of Christmas themed candy, and aisle filled with Christmas themed gifts, and then other sections had great gifts and toys for kids.

Since I was there to shop for stocking stuffers for my kids, I picked up a few things in the candy aisle and headed for the toys.  I was pleasantly surprised by all the character items they had.  Disney Princesses, Disney Cars, Spongebob, Dora and more.  They had a lot of my kids favorite characters!

The picture below is hard to see because my phone camera isn’t that great but I think you get an idea of the breadth of different items and options and you can definitely see the yellow $1 and $2 signs.

In the end I picked out 17 things for their stockings and paid $26.20 with tax (my items came to $24.50 so I was right on with the budget).

Take a look at what I bought:

It’s a bunch of fun little toys, some with their favorite characters, that they will enjoy, can take with us as we visit family for the holidays and didn’t break the bank!  I think they will be pretty excited to receive all these items in their stockings this year.

I don’t have a picture of the items in the stockings, but Santa will be filling the green and pink one up with what I bought from Dollar General.

If I had to give you one tip for saving money on stocking stuffers this year, the obvious tip would be to shop at Dollar General.  But besides that I’d also suggest that you check out Dollar General for some non-traditional stocking stuffers like adorable knit hats, cute kids socks and mittens.  I had already gotten these items elsewhere for my kids, otherwise I would have filled their stockings with those kinds of items.  Dollar General had some really cute ones at great prices!

What do you like to fill your kids stockings with?

  1. I used to get the same kinds of things for my kids when they were young. They always also had a toothbrudh, a bag of coal bubbleum, gold chocolate coins, and breath mints. I wish there had been a Dollar General around back then (15 years ago) I ended up getting their stuff at a drug store and I know I spent more than you did.
I’m sure they both loved everything!

Hey, I picked up a few similar stocking stuffers. It’s the first stocking year for the 2-year-old, though I doubt he’ll remember it. I got some girly things and some science-y and toy items for DD: a magnet, Burt’s Bees lip gloss, the ubiquitous “big-girl” underwear, princess wand, small doll, original (metal) Slinky, wooden pop toy, sticker book, things like that. I don’t shop at Dollar General either, but from what you bought, it looks like they might have some potential stuff–so maybe I should! Thanks for sharing, Kim!
