(ended) Diversity on Demand for Black History Month ($100 GC Giveaway)

diversity (dih-vur-si-tee) – noun

The state or quality of being different or varied.

We are at our very nature diverse, and this country was founded upon principles that aspire to embrace that diversity.  Through the years there have been a lot of struggles to fulfill that line in The Declaration of Independence which reads, in part, “that all men are created equal” but we have made some strides towards achieving it.

One important tool in the journey to embracing diversity in every aspect of the human condition is Black History Month.

Every year in February we celebrate the great contribution that African American’s have made in this country and across the world.  We celebrate their achievements, their discoveries, their art, their music, etc. – and we also look back on those who affected great change towards equality.

In honor of Black History Month, cable companies and cable networks have joined together in order to give everyone the opportunity to experience multiculturalism through television programming with Diversity on Demand.

About Diversity on Demand:

Cable companies and cable networks are uniting to provide customers the opportunity to experience multiculturalism through history, drama, comedy, and even the joy of food.

I believe it is so very important for cable networks to embrace diversity and bring the programming and the message to the forefront of our attention, especially with family-friendly programming and learning opportunities.  The examples we set for our children set the tone for the future and it is critical that we embrace the differences between us all.

Take a look at some great videos from NBC Universal about the topic of diversity.  The montage video is my favorite!

This year, it’s hard to think about African-American film contributions without considering the great actresses who appeared in the movie “The Help”.  The film itself contained a powerful message about equality, and there were so many amazing women who brought to life the characters that I fell in love with in the original novel.  While I have a number of African-American actors on my list of favorite TV and film stars, Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis definitely top the list right now.  One of my goals is to find past films they have appeared in and watch them, but I absolutely will be at the front of the ticket line to see anything new they appear in.

How about you, do you have a favorite African-American actor or actress?
