I think I may have upset the delicate balance of our home.
I told a lie.
It was a big fat obvious lie that I thought for sure would cause my son to flat out accuse me of lying to him.
But he didn’t.
In fact, he accepted it.
Without hesitation. Without question.
You see, we have been eating those little “Cuties” mandarin oranges around here a lot lately. Jake has eaten them and seemed to like them. Today I asked him if he wanted an orange and he said, “no, I don’t like them.”
me: “What do you mean you don’t like them? You’ve been eating them all week.”
Jake: “I don’t like them. They have castor oil in them (thank you Tom & Jerry).”
me: “They don’t have castor oil in them, that is silly.”
Jake: “Well what kind of oil do they have in them?”
me: “No oil, just orange.”
Jake: “But what else is in them?”
me: (ok I’ll play) “They have chocolate in them.”
Jake: “Chocolate, really?”
me: “Sure…why not?”
Jake: “I’ll have an orange too please.”
Yes, I was as shocked as you are. HE BELIEVED ME? Or…..he is smarter than me and one day soon I will rue the day when I lied about the existence of chocolate in oranges. I am braced for that day…when the teacher asks to me see me after school because of it. “Yes, Mrs. Teacher Lady, I know that oranges don’t have chocolate in them. No, I’m not an idiot nor do I lie to my son all the time….”
I am happy I got him to eat the oranges. Yes, mom won the battle this time. But will I win the war?
In the words of Fox Mulder “I would never lie. I willfully participate in a campaign of misinformation.”
Look at that face…I totally believe he is smart enough to use this against me.
All in good time…

You’re right that it’ll probably come back at you someday when you least expect it, my oldest son used to specifically ask for “junk to eat”, I told him apples were the worst junk food that he could eat and it worked…. My 4 year old thinks that he gets Vitamin D from going down the slide in our backyard, he wouldn’t go outside to play in the hot, sunshine if I didn’t tell him that so I believe in “whatever works”! :D
In the meantime, you took precious ground in the battle and your son is eating something that is good for him. That’s not a lie in my opinion, just strategic placement of the troops… :D
Somebody beat me to it – I was thinking of Terri’s Chocolate Oranges too! Yumm!
I tell Kaylee her medicine is made out of strawberries and bananas. Whatever works. BTW, cute picture:)
So Cute~! lol
I might debate the whole “no castor oil” thing. They sure do make my children “active” in that department!
You are such an evil mom! LOL!
May I have an orange too please? I didn’t know they had chocolate in them.
I’m totally cracking up at the castor oil comment. Kids have the craziest ideas sometimes.
This does go to show that sometimes kids will believe what they cannot see.
That will totally come back to bite you in the ass someday. But then you can always buy one of those chocolate oranges to prove you weren’t totally lying. He just misunderstood ;)
