From the mind of a 4 year old…

As we sit here eating lunch today, Jake is at the counter breakfast bar and I am at the table. I shamefully admit that we are watching Tom & Jerry while eating and am sitting sort of sideways to him.

As I watch Tom & Jerry (oh, the memories) I hear:

“Do boxes talk?”

I responded, “only if you are weird.”

So my friends, Tom and Jerry aside, how are my parenting skills today?

Overheard in the house today…

Jake was talking on the phone to his Grandma…

Obviously I only got Jake’s side of the conversation.

“Did you know I got a car from the garage sale?”

“I got a John Deere gator.”

“Yeah and did you know Max went to sleep and will never wake up?”

“Yeah and did you know he’s with God?”

“And they are all playing together?”

“What dog did you have when I was growing in mommy’s belly?”

“Ok I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Ok, I’ll talk to you tomorrow when you go downstairs and find your pool.”

Awesome!

We interrupt your previously scheduled post…

I’m not a deep or publicly emotional person. I’m just an “Accidental Mommy” and have always kept that kind of stuff to myself because “emotions are for girly-girls”. It’s not that I don’t have deep emotion, I just generally save it for when my husband most needs some good nagging.

Well, keep your panty hose on, because it’s gonna get a little bit mushy.

(by the way, this is another of those late night posts, and WHAT DID MY DOG EAT? He is killing me.)

My daughter will be 8 months old on July 27th. It is seriously hard to believe the time has gone by so quickly. Every day something about her amazes me. I mean, I made her! (well, Ed was there too I guess…) She has recently started crawling. It started out as the funniest “slither-crawl” with her actually covering some ground but not being able to move her arms and legs together so she would end up on her belly between every move. We encouraged her so much for the few weeks she did that. In hindsight, why did we do that? Now she is at full blown, “I’m getting up and leaving this room and you have to chase me and keep me out of trouble” stage.

Vents are people too

This is my daughter’s new best friend:

air vent

So is this:

air vent

And so are the numerous others she has recently discovered through the house.

When she spots one, she squeals and makes fast work of getting over to it. Then she scratches her fingers across it and talks and coos at it.

And we spent how much on actual baby toys???

Help a new mom out - Does she need a mobile?

My sister-in-law Jenny (not the Jenny injured by fireworks) is expecting her first baby and asked a question in the comments of this post: A Great New Site: Newbaby.com and I thought I’d turn it into its own post so that all the other great moms out there can help her out.

Here is her question:

I have a question for all the experienced mommies out there. I was talking to Kim yesterday and told her that I was in a little funk because Carlos and I registered for some baby things and I didn’t get my first choice bedding because it didn’t have a mobile that matched. I thought that a mobile just sort of went with every baby nursery and that it needed one. However, Jake never slept in his crib and Abby liked her mobile for about 2 weeks and now she likes the things that hang on the inside of the crib that she can press buttons and lights up n stuff. So my question to other moms..is a mobile really necessary?

So what do you think? Is a mobile really necessary? Please vote and explain your answer in a comment if you can!

Is a mobile necessary for a baby's crib?

How to have an “Accidental Mommy” moment

accidental mommy moment badge You start with 1 thing.

You start by being a mommy.

That is pretty much a prerequisite, there is no getting around that one.

Next, can be one, or a combination of either of these things:

  1. You find yourself in a situation where you are doing or saying (with or about or for your kids) something you never though you would do or say in a million years.
  2. You can have any number of things happen, any of which put into question, by either yourself or the casual observer that maybe, just maybe, you might not have the skills or stamina necessary to survive the event or events.

Finally, you survive and come out a better and stronger mommy in the end!

For a perfect example of an “Accidental Mommy” moment, check out When did a trip to the Mall have to become so, you know, difficult? over at Table For Five.

Oh, the mysteries otherwise known as little boys!

Why is it that little boys wait until the very, very last minute to go to the bathroom that they end up having to run at full speed to the toilet and often aren’t fast enough and pee on their shorts?

By the end of the day I often have a big pile of little shorts in the corner of the bathroom that were unfortunate recipients of “too much pee, too little time!”

I thought it was my imagination that I was doing so much laundry!

Funny how the word pee has become as commonplace as any other word in my vocabulary like sleep or sanity - although sanity is not so common around here anymore.

Lego Fruit snacks, a fun snack or asking for trouble?

lego fruit snacksI recently came a cross this article: Train your kids to swallow a choking hazard with Lego “Fun Snacks” and at first of sort of discounted it as someone over-reacting.

I thought about it some more, and I can see his point, at least where smaller kids are concerned, but in general I don’t think they need to pull them from the shelves. Parents need to just do their jobs and be diligent and careful when buying them for their younger kids.

I think too many parents are looking to avoid certain things all together rather than teaching our children the proper skills to handle them.

What do you think? Should they pull the Lego fruit snacks off the shelves because they could possibly cause more kids to choke on the real Lego’s? And by the way, the little tiny Lego’s say 4 and up for the simple sets, the more complicated sets say something like 7 and up.

Her Hair Came Out of Nowhere!

My daughter woke up this morning with hair.

And not just any hair….weird hair just on the top of her head.

Well, she did have some hair before, a fine thin layer of it, but nothing like what she woke up with.

Even she is surprised!

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no…it’s a NAP!

Ladies and gentleman (ok mostly ladies) we had a unique phenomenon occur in our house today.

My daughter took a nap.

And it was longer than 20 minutes.

And it was in her own bed.

And for almost 2 1/2 hours I sat around doing absolutely nothing expecting her to wake up any minute.

So…

I got nothing done, but WHO CARES!

She took a NAP.

At least I think that’s what it was. I haven’t actually seen one in quite awhile.

Below is a photo of Abby sleeping. Not today (what kind of nut would go into the bedroom of a napping baby and take a picture?) but from a few weeks ago when she fell asleep where she wasn’t supposed to.

Smile and Open Your Eyes - it apparently can’t be done!

I wanted to get a picture of Jake with his cool new haircut.

Just a nice smiling picture.

Here is the first shot I ended up with:

As usual, the kid can’t keep his eyes open when he smiles.

So I tried again..
