Bugalug hair Barrettes & Headbands – A review

Bugalug Baby has created an entire line of cute and yet, very hip, hair accessories.  They generously provided two barrettes and one hair band for us to review.

Of course, like most products, Bugalug Barrettes were born out of a need. There were so few cute barrettes out there and nothing that would stay in my friends newborn’s hair. Together we tried many different styles, ribbons, clips etc. and this was the best product we could make. We loved the idea that they were safe (non-toxic glue), super cute and yet not too cutesy, and that they stayed where they were put! And Bugalug Barrettes was born.

Would it be too greedy, to say I’d love to have one of everything?  Just kidding; I’m not enough of a real girl to wear them, but I LOVE the colors and designs!

Bugalug Headbands -
We are so excited to finally bring you our Bugalug ribbon headbands. They have been in store for a few months and doing so well, we could hardly keep up! These trendy headbands are perfect for anyone from infants to adults. One size fits most, however, unlike many other headbands, we do not use elastics which can cause the headbands to slide off the head. Our innovative, patent-pending design uses a comfortable toggle that allows you to make the headband the PERFECT size for your head. Some headbands are even reversible…….

Our take on Bugalug’s hair accessories:

Unlike Kim, who does things in a well ordered manner, we ripped right into the package and promptly tried them on.  So, no pictures.  Rest assured, the hair accessories were on hang cards and nicely wrapped in tissue paper.

From the Lollipop collection, the Lollipop Green Flowers barrette is entirely covered in grosgrain ribbon.  We tried the barrettes on both Madeline’s fine hair, and Olivia’s thick hair.  They don’t wear barrettes a lot of the time because they are always falling out.  The Bugalug barrettes stayed in place as long as the girls wore them.  We did not have to reposition them a single time.  I have never had a barrette that stayed in place like these.  The barrette has a silicon gel grip surface on the inside that seems to be the secret.

From the Ribbon & Blues collection, the Ribbon & Blues Squares is a 1″ wide grosgrain ribbon headband.  Unlike other headbands, the Bugalug headband is not elastic, but relies on their patented toggle to adjust the size to fit.  This toggle is brilliant!  Both ends of the ribbon feed through the toggle, and the toggle has a button that you push to adjust the size.  When not pushed, the button locks the ribbon in place.  Olivia used to wear headbands all the time, but I think she got frustrated with always having to adjust them.  In some cases, it was every five minutes.  Eventually, she stopped wearing them. 

Once we managed to get the ribbon on her head (it easily fits most adult heads, but she has an exceptionally large melon), it stayed in place until she took it off.  Like the barrettes, we did not have to adjust it a single time.  That is an amazing improvement!  We did have a bit of trouble gettting the initial adjustments, I don’t think she would be able to do it completely by herself. But, if you have a daughter that is adept at doing her own hair, she should have no problem putting the headband on.

The barrettes sell for $4 each, and the headbands are $8.  At first, I thought this was a bit expensive.  But, then I started thinking about the drawer full of cheap barrettes that will never be worn because they do not stay in place or have (practically immediately) broken teeth or hinges.  Or the headbands that have lost their elasticity (as well as looking gross) because of constantly having to adjust them.  After seeing these hair accessories in action, they are well worth the money.
