Braincandy, Hear My World DVD – a review

What is Braincandy?

Braincandy is a Seattle based children’s media company whose mission is to create educationally inventive, enriching, entertaining products that help young children learn about themselves as they fully experience the world around them.

Braincandy has produced a series of “5 Senses” DVD’s:

  • See My World
  • Hear My World
  • Taste My World
  • Touch My World
  • Smell My World

We received a copy of Hear My World to review and pretty much the consensus here is 2 thumbs up.

Braincandy Hear My WorldWhen the video first started, I actually thought my 4 1/2 year old son would leave the room and not return, but that was not the case. From the second the Braincandy song started he was hooked. When he left the room for something he asked me to pause it. The music, the characters, the real kids, the funny sounds and everything else that makes up Braincandy captured his attention and imagination. I asked him if he would rather watch Spongebob (which I try to avoid anyway) or Braincandy and he answered “Braincandy.” Even my 7 month old daughter would watch, especially the music and sound segments.

My favorite part of the video was the “telephone” scene where a character whispers something into the ear of one of the kids and then they pass it on to the next kid and so on. It is very cute and my son thinks it is hysterical. The music is cool, the characters are funny, and the lessons are subtle and fun! We did have one confusing moment where my son asked me about the broccoli. He was referring to Bruce Brain!

From my perspective Braincandy, Hear My World comes off as a cross between Sesame Street and Baby Einstein, but with a new and modern approach. It is creative and captivating and teaches language and literacy skills in a unique way.
