About

What’s That Smell? began as the journey through motherhood and beyond of me (Kim) and my friend Lori.  Together we called ourselves  “Accidental Mommies” because we never thought we fit the mold.

Our motto in starting this site was:

“An ‘Accidental Mommy’ is a mommy who never thought she was mommy material but has learned through poop, spit-up and tears that she has what it takes”

What exactly did we mean by “Accidental Mommy”?

In some circles it’s an “oops, I was hoping that wouldn’t happen and nine months later you’re a mommy” type mommy. That’s not the kind of ‘accidental’ we’re referring to here.

We called ourselves “accidental” mommies because neither of us are typical mommy material. In fact, many years ago we used to joke that there were 2 kinds of women – “real girls” and “not real girls”. We fit into the “not real girls” category and were quite proud of it. As fairly successful women in a male dominated career field, we wore slacks instead of skirts, we shunned make-up and chick-flicks and were in many ways grown up tom-boys.

Today, while still not the “real girls” we once spoke of, we find ourselves in situations where we experience the way the other half lives…..that is, we are slowly becoming “real mommies.” At times it’s simply frightening while others barely tolerable. But often, as much as we hate to admit it, it’s actually pretty cool.

How do we know each other?

We met while working for an Architectural firm. Lori actually interviewed me for a drafting job.

As the only two women aside from the receptionist (Kathy, we miss you, where are you?) and both “not girlie-girls” we became friends. Eventually, however, Lori left to go live full time in “Hooterville” but we remained friends.

That was 13 YEARS AGO! Wow, I haven’t done that math in a long time. I was 12 when we met (chuckle).

Today we live about 2 1/2 hours apart and only manage to see each other about once a year. Hopefully that will change when there are no more babies and it is easier to travel with the kids. As “recovering former Architects” we both stay at home with our kids. Lori has been brave enough to home-school hers (3 in total), I’m considering military school for both of mine (do they take them under age 6?).

What’s That Smell? NOW

Now, Lori is busy with real life so I’ve pretty much taken over the blog 100%.

I write about my kids, current events, shopping deals, and whatever else strikes my interest.  My son is 6 and my daughter is 2, and there is always something going on here worthy of talking about.

Thanks for stopping by!
