Today I had a pre-natal checkup. The kind where they weight you, take your BP, listen to the baby, measure the bump and ask if you are ok and if the baby is kicking. Pretty simple easy and straightforward…well, except for the peeing in a cup. C’mon…it’s hard enough to do without a 40lb bump in your middle, let alone now…and with those TINY cups….I’m glad their soap dispenser is always full!
Anyhow, as I was sitting in the waiting room and Jake was shocking other women in the waiting room with his reading skills I overheard (well, you really couldn’t help it…she talked LOUD) this woman act completely and utterly shocked to know that her due date was 3 weeks away. At first I thought she was just so tired and out of it that it snuck up on her quickly. I was wrong. She then made a phone call and incredulously informed the person on the other end that she was due in three weeks so she better get to the store to buy some baby stuff. “I’m in shock,” she said. Then she said “I’ll have to call Pastor and tell him I just found out I’m due in three weeks.”
Now, I realize I may have missed something, but how weird is that? I knew I was pregnant before the doctor’s test did. I took the pregnancy test in his office and it came back negative and they sent me home saying it was still too early to tell. I knew I was pregnant, and it was confirmed 20 minutes later when they called back and told me that as they were throwing the “specimen” out, the stick changed color slightly. I knew early on with my son too.
And as far as the due date goes, I can’t go so far as to tell you how many days until mine, but I certainly know when it is and how many weeks I have left. I’ve also bought enough diapers to last 6 months!
So I’m thinking there has to be another explanation, right? You hear about these women who one day give birth and didn’t even know they were pregnant, but this woman was not a large woman, and she had her 2 year old daughter there with her so she must have done this before. It was very bizarre.
Oh, and I was too polite to ask the nurse what the deal was…if the waiting room had been empty I would have, but there were other people there and that was too rude, even for me.

I sometimes watch the show on Discovery Health, “I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant” and am completely amazed that people can be so stupid. I’m like you, I knew with both my boys (and with the one I lost) that I was pregnant before it was confirmed by the OB/GYN and even knew when I conceived and when I was due…. How come these grown women have no idea????
Heather, I know right?
yeah, thats odd!
