25 years later, adopt a Kid from the Cabbage Patch

Cabbage Patch KidI do not look back with fondness on the decade known as the 80′s. In the 1980′s I was an awkward pre-teen and eventually a teen who never found the music, clothing or any other trends from those years as anything other than ugly and annoying. Sure, I participated in the fads. The big white Wham sweatshirts with the multi-colored numbers, the rolled jeans bottoms, New Kids on the Block and more. And although I look back on all of my childhood as wonderful memories, the 80′s in general were not my finest years, nor were they the best popular culture ever produced either. That being said, one of the memories I do have that I look upon fondly are the memories of a certain doll I had called a Cabbage Patch Kid.

In general, I was a bit too old for dolls when the Cabbage Patch Kids came on the scene, and I was never much of a girly-girl anyway, but my sister had a couple and I admit to having one as well, although she mostly sat on a shelf in my room.

Strangely, well, not strange for me, one of the things I remember most about the Cabbage Patch Kid is how they smelled.

Seriously.

I can’t describe it really, but when you opened a Cabbage Patch Kid for the first time, and for a few months afterwards, they always had their own “new car smell” of sorts.

Or maybe I’m just weird…

Back in 1983 when the Cabbage Patch Kids made their appearance on toys shelves, they actually didn’t spend much time there. People were buying these cute little dolls like crazy and they became incredibly hard to find. They became the best selling large doll of all time selling an unprecedented 115 million dolls.

Well now these one-of-a-kind kids are back for a limited time for their 25th Anniversary and you can buy them at retail stores for the first time since the 80′s. They come in special keepsake packaging and include a special “25th Anniversary” Xavier Roberts signature, a special “silver anniversary” baby spoon and commemorative silver-stamped 25th Anniversary birth certificates and adoption papers.

We were sent our very own one-of-a-kind kid and although Abby is too young for us to take it out of the package, she seemed to like it and I can’t wait for her to be old enough to play with it. Her name is Audrey Vilma and her birthday is February 27th. She had blonde hair and big blue eyes just like Abby.

Here’s a “blast from the past” style slideshow to take you way back to the 80′s (yes, we had color TV back then but I thought this was funny):

Here’s the same slideshow all modern-like:

To learn more about Cabbage Patch Kids, visit them online at the Cabbage Patch Kids official website.

After September 1st, make sure to visit the official 25th Anniversary Cabbage Patch Kids website for more information about the Limited Edition 25th Anniversary Cabbage Patch Kids.

I can’t wait to open ours.

To smell it.

I tried to smell it through the box. Nothing…

How about you, do you remember sniffing a Cabbage Patch Doll?

 I am ashamed to admit it, but i had a cpk, and i’m a guy… I was never into dolls or anything girly, but for some reason, i HAD to have one. Without a doubt, the best thing about it was it’s smell. I was curious if the new ones smell the same; i guess they do! I’ve also wondered how they scent them, anyone know? Also, is there a perfume that smells like them?

  2. Lori says:

Kim, only you would comment on the smell of a CPK!! By the way, man, are you young! :>

  3. Sassy says:

Oh I remember my first CPK. She was a red head named Rebecca. It is so hard to believe it’s been 25 years since they came out. My girls has a vast collections of these dolls. They love them just as much as I did. And they smelled so good. It was baby powder fresh all the time.

  4. Heather B. says:

Oh I totally remember smelling them!! I love that they came out with these 25th anniversary ones!

  5. Kari says:

OH yes, loved these…..but for some crazy reason I was never allowed to have one when I was little. I know I was deprived. BUT my little 5 yr old totally has one….so I get to play with her!! Ha!! :D

  6. Has it seriously been 25 years? I feel old now lol

  7. My CP was Lindsay. She had red hair, like me. Then I also got a corn silk CP, and sadly I do not remember her name. But since my mom is a pack rat, my girls now have my CP’s.
