What would you eat?
Ok, here is my next baby shower question.
Does it matter what kind of food you serve?
I’m sure the answers vary greatly, but I’d love to hear what people eat at baby showers.
Does it have to be cute and frilly and all fancy? Or can it be like a tailgate party?
What do you think?

My wonderful baby shower was hosted by my mother-in-law in March, and with the exception of the cake and some sugar cubes, she made everything herself. I had a rubber ducky theme, so she had a picture cake made with the same rubber ducky that was on my invites, and then she found some really cute sugar cubes with ducks on them. The other foods were just little lunch-time snacks…it only took her 2 hours or so to prepare it and we had over 30 guests.
The food was utterly delish, and everyone thought the cake was so adorable, but it certainly wasn’t the center of the baby shower. If we had KFC or pizza or something, I’m sure no one would have really minded. It just depends on how much work you want to put in, but there are actually plenty of recipes that take less than 10 minutes to put together (i.e. a HUGE bowl of salad).

I think it depends on time of day, guest list, etc. This spring a friend and I were trying to coordinate every busy schedules (including me moving away) to host a baby shower for another friend (who also had a busy schedule). We finally decided a Fri evening would work best, but we consider that family time, and it would be over supper time, so we had a family picnic supper on my friend’s back porch & yard, w/ baked potatoes and all the works. Our original plan had been to have a girls only tea party mid-day on Sunday, in that case we’d have had a very different menu, it’s just a matter of when, who, theme IMO.

We actually had my baby shower (7 years ago) at Pizza Hut. We just let someone else do the cooking and who doesn’t like pizza?

Anything delicious can be served, but a cutesy cake is always nice.
People like to eat though. I’ve been o a shower with all appetizers and people were waiting for food.
A ziti and salad or one of those big sandwiches from the deli with salad always goes over well.

We had my shower at a hall, but that is because my husbands family is so insanely large. We had salad, chicken breast, and some veggies, along with a yummy cake.

It depends. I loved my baby shower it was at a friend’s home and very low key. She served appetizer portions of an array of food. And honestly I can’t really remember what all was served but my favorite was the mini crabcakes. Delish.
Now, this past weekend a friend attended a shower that was held at a banquet hall and was basically like a wedding - with full dias and everything.
So, it all depends on how you approach it.

I’m all about tailgate appetizers (THAT would be a dream shower!), but some of my favorite showers have served chicken salad on croissants, fruit/veggie/meat/cheese trays. I don’t like punch, but peach or orange iced tea is perfect!!

For my baby shower and my sisters we did a bunch of hordourves/appetizers (snacky type of foods). We held it in the afternoon after lunch. Very casual.

My baby shower was held at a tavern and it was great. We had some pasta, chicken, a salad and soup and my Mother in law baked cupcakes that were adorable.
When I hosted my sister-in-law’s, it was more of a spa theme with a few salads, veggie tray, herbal teas, crostini with pickled beets and goat cheese (http://find.myrecipes.com/recipes/recipefinder.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_id=424539)
and the favors were soaps that I had made with glycerin from the craft store and essential oils. It was very elegant.

I think it can go either way, but I guess my baby shower was more tailgate. We had a 3 foot long sub from a local sandwich shop called Thundercloud Subs, but you can get the same thing from Subway. We also had a bunch of chips and dips, the cake of course, possibly ice cream (don’t really remember) and assorted drinks like water, lemonade, sprite, root beer, etc.

I think the food really depends on the guest of honor and the demographics of the crowd. Having said that, I like the idea of real food, something hearty always goes well with cake and punch and ice cream. But you also want to do something easy with little upkeep during the event. You could do a “season” themed meal with a chili bar (maybe a regular and a veggie kind), with toppings or a taco bar with shells, salad, even walking tacos using bags of Fritos and various toppings, or even one or two kinds of soup with bread bowls. Yes, it’s me…I know a good soup maker who will share recipes if needed
Spaghetti could be an option too, use a few crock pots to keep things warm and just boil the pasta, add some garlic bread and a salad and you’re good to go.

I’m another who says time of day is a big influence.
I’ve been to the fancy shower types and I’ve been to the not so fancy.
My favorite shower (thrown for me) was kinda a casual thing. For food, we served finger sandwiches, crackers and dip (a cheese ball, and spinach dip) fruit, nuts, and mints.
Everyone enjoyed the foods.

My favorite shower food is mini food - baby versions of regular dishes and appetizers. Baby corn, cocktail franks or pigs in a blanket, finger sandwiches, mini bagels and cream cheese, pizza rolls, stuff like that.

We had a sandwich platter (little breads, meats, veggies, and cheeses), chips, a giant pot of Rotel cheese sauce, and cake. Basically the food was planned around feeding the pregnant woman rather than her guests. LOL
