FURminator pet deShedding tool - a review and giveaway
If your pets look like either of these….

….you can probably pass on reading this post. But if you have a pet with hair (gerbils, hamster and other rodents not included…*shiver*…) you will want to keep reading.
I was recently sent a FURminator grooming tool to try from the fantastic people at FURminator. I was very excited to try this product, and only a week before we received it, we had run out to make an “emergency” trip to our local vet for one on a Saturday afternoon only to find out they had already closed. Simon, our golden retriever had some knots in his fur and was shedding like he never has before and we needed a solution.
What is a FURminator?
FURminator is actually a brand name for a line of professional deShedding products. They carry tools (brushes), shampoos and solutions, and treats and supplements. All of their products aim is to reduce your dogs shedding.
What does the FURminator deShedding tool do?
The FURminator deSheding tool “reduces shedding up to 90 percent by removing the loose, dead undercoat without damaging the topcoat.”
From the website:
• Guaranteed to reduce shedding better than any brush, comb or rake
• Works great on all shedding, long and short-haired dogs and cats
• Brings out the pet’s natural oils, promoting healthier skin and a shiny topcoat
• Reduces the amount of airborne elements that cause allergic reactions in many people
• Helps to eliminate hairballs in cats
How does the FURminator deShedding tool work?
You use it like you would any other brush, comb or rake. Below is a demo video showing the tool being used on a large dog.
Below is a photo from the FURminator website showing the actual hair removed during a single use of the the tool.

What animals can I use the FURminator deShedding tool on?
From cats all the way up to horses, they make a FURminator deShedding tool that is just the right size for your pet.
My take on the FURminator deShedding tool:
I was sent a “large deShedding tool” which has a 4″ wide deShedding edge and is appropriate for large dogs, which Simon certainly qualifies as!
Here are a couple of photos of Simon before he was “FURminated.” It’s hard to tell because I didn’t take a close-up but he was pretty rough and had knots around his ears.
Simon likes to be brushed. He’s pretty good about sitting still and seems to enjoy it. Brushing him with the FURminator was different. He actually looked a little drunk he enjoyed it so much. Here are some photos during brushing…look at his face!
I made the mistake of using the FURminator in the house. Don’t do that. With Abby crawling around it was just easier for me, but the incredible amount of fur this thing removes just makes it impossible to clean all of it up. I brushed Simon for maybe 10 minutes and that included working on the matting and knots around his ears. He gets them all the time. The FURminator actually removed the knots without pain and with little effort. For the first time, I didn’t need to cut them out, even though some were tight to his skin.
Below are some photos showing Simon after I finished. I did take him outside later and removed a ton more hair. Our lawn looked like it was growing fur, it was covered in it! But even after just the 10 minutes in the house Simon’s fur was not only softer, it looked shiner and brighter than it ever had before.
After using the FURminator deShedding tool we noticed a significant decrease in the amount of hair left on our carpet. Abby is usually the indicator. If she’s got dog hair stuck to her slimey hands and face, we know Simon is shedding a lot. I used to have to vacuum every day and now only vacuum every other day. I could push it to twice a week, but with Abby spending much of her time on the floor, I prefer to vacuum more frequently in general.
Where to buy:
You can buy FURminator products nationwide at PETCO and PetSmart, and there are likely other places to buy them locally in your area as well. You can use the “where to buy” tab on the FURminator website for more information.
You can also buy them online at Amazon.com: FURminator products on Amazon.
Not only did FURminator send a deShedding tool for me to use, they sent 5 (yes, FIVE) more for me to give away to our readers.

5 lucky readers will each win a medium size professional FURminator deShedding tool. The medium size is good for long & short haired dogs and cats, and is versatile enough for most sizes. If you have a particularly small pet, it might be a bit too big and if you have a particularly large pet, it might take you a bit longer to brush them, but it should still be effective.
The medium size FURminator sells for anywhere from it’s retail price of $49.95 to under $30 on various places across the web.
How to enter:
To enter to win your very own FURminator, all you need to do is leave a comment on this post telling me who the FURminator would be for. For example, “I want to win a FURminator to use on my 150 lb Mastiff dog named Fifi.” Please include type of animal (cat or dog), breed if a dog (if mixed, you can just say “mixed”) and the animal’s name. If it would be for a friend or family member, that is fine, just tell me a little about their pet.
REMEMBER: your entry will only count if you include the following:
*Type (Cat or dog)
*Breed (if known)
*Pet’s name
Earn additional entries:
You can earn additional entries for each of the following activities:

I would love to win one of these, for Wilkie she’s a border collie / hound mix and she sheds loads which isn’t great with a baby that wants to be on the floor all the time. She weighs around 60 pounds so holding her still for hours using a plain dog brush is kind of a big pain !

I DESPERATELY need one of these for my dad’s two cats who leave cat hair EVERYWHERE! Like you Kim, I use Josh as the guide as to how much hair has been shed… he looks like a furball after an afternoon of playing!
August 26th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Our dog, Kira, who is an Australian SHepard mix sheds like crazy. We DESPERATELY need a FURminator for her. I have a almost 5 month old that will be crawling soon. As it is now I always find hair on his hands. It drives me totally nuts. I can only vacummn so many times in a day, lol.

The FURminator sounds awesome! I have two furry kitties, Ricky Martin and Lucille. Every time I go around cleaning the upholstery from their favorite napping spots, I collect enough hair to make a whole ‘nother cat. We’re having a baby in October so I really need to get this fur under control before she comes!
August 26th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
We have a black lab named Mia. And does she ever shed! My great niece, who is just about 8 months old, lives with us and ends up with Mia’s hair all over her hands, face and high chair. We vacuum everyday but just can’t keep up with the hair. We really need the Furminator!!!
August 27th, 2008 at 2:33 am

August 27th, 2008 at 6:53 am
Oh gosh I have been trying to wait until I have some extra money to get one of these!
I need one for my two rescue dogs! Bayles and Bleu, No clue what breed either really is, bayles looks like a desert fox, red and brown and black and lovable and mischievous, and bleu looks like a border collie and a terrier mix with the brightest blue eyes and is a mama’s boy. The both shed like the dickens and we bought a new house and no vacuum will pick it all up. I would love this!
Simon really does look drunk in the photo, hilarious!

We also have two shed-monster cats, Gabby and Li’l Bit (a Siamese and a black and white)
August 27th, 2008 at 9:21 am
i would use the furminator on our dsh cat guinness who is constantly hacking up hair balls. and he actively seeks out any opportunity to run outside when the door is open to munch on grass.

I’d love to win this for my labrador retriever, Lizzy. She desperately needs to be furminated!!!
Thanks for the chance!

Oh for the love of animals everywhere! I need this more than anything. My yellow lab, sheds year round, but during the summer it is like having multiple rabbit sized hair tumbleweeds in the house! I love to leave the doors open, but when the breeze comes through those tumbleweed hair balls start moving too! Nilla the 85 pound lab is not very tolerant of the brush I am currently using, and I don’t blame her, since I would have to brush her for hours to get all the hair off! I am so excited about this contest!
August 27th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
What great timing! We just had to get our medium hair mixed breed cat, Melissa totally shaved because of all the mats. We really need something to help out her fur. I personally consider her a long hair because she has so much hair & is so fluffy! This would be so great & Melissa would thank you! Right now the poor thing looks like a squirrel with a cat head with her fur shaved off, lol.

August 27th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
Hi, I would love to win a Furminator. I have 2 dogs, a chihuahua named louie and a pomeranian named popi…they shed a grip and I desparately need a tool just like Furminator!!
August 27th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
I actually really need one of these because taking 3 animals to a groomer is too expensive. We can’t afford it right now so I haven’t brought them. If I won I’d use it first on Shadow my Himalayan cat, then on Rennie my other Himalayan cat and finally on Nookie who is hubby’s Siberian Husky. Rennie’s got a couple of knots by her belly and Shadow has a one in the making near his tail. After seeing the picture of what came off of your dog I’m afraid to think of how much hair would come off of Nookie. Thanks for the terrific giveaway!

I have a big (65 lb.), beautiful German Shepherd named Freya. She sheds like mad, and doesn’t like being brushed, so I need something highly effective, because a few minutes a day is all I will get.
August 27th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Hi, I have read good things about this product. We have a 16 year old mixed breed dog named Beethoven. He has long, thick black hair! Our family finds clumps of his black hair everywhere. Please enter my name in your giveaway drawing. Many thanks, Cindi

My daughter could use this handy tool for her shi tsu dog named Abbie.Sweet little dog but lots of hair!
August 28th, 2008 at 12:51 am
I’d love to win this for my sister’s kitty named, “Midnight.” She has the absolute most silkiest fur I’ve ever felt, but she sheds a lot so this would be great for her!! I’m not sure what breed she is, but she’s a pretty big kitty who has black fur with cute little white paws and a little white patch on her head. She’s a super cute kitty. I’m totally guessing, but I’d estimate her weight at about 10-15 pounds. This is a great giveaway!!
Thanks so much!!

This is a product I really NEED! We are SERIOUS animal lovers around here! We have four large dogs: Belle, a 14 year old Lab mix; Buddy, an 8 year old German Shepherd; Buster, a 4 year old Boxer/Siberian Husky mix; and, Bullet, a 3 year old Boxer/Lab mix. We also have two mixed breed, medium-haired cats, Stetson and Calamity. As you can see, I have a constant battle in my home with pet hair, and the Furminator would be a Godsend for me! By the way, we also have two Tennessee Walking horses, Utah and Brisco, and I’d like to try the Furminator out on them, too! Thanks for having the giveaway!
August 28th, 2008 at 11:35 am
Holy H. Smokes Jr.! I would love to send you a photo of my floors! I used to have wood floors( I think) but now they’re covered with fluffy white FUR.
My beloved Buddy is a mixed breed American Samoyed (mixed with what, we don’t know; the mom is a Heinz 57), and his favorite activity is to come running up to everyone and SHAKE!
Shake! Shake! Shake! Shake his boootay! Fur goes airborne, everywhere! Without the Furminator, there is no hope!
I love ol Buddy to death, but his hair is clogging up our family nostril collection.
We also have 3 cats and they shed daily. Just to ANNOY me.
My vacuum cleaner won’t leave the closet any more, it is so worn out.
I will definitely share the bloggy love, and it is with great hope that you will be able to save us from our furry nightmare.
August 28th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Oh I really, really need one of these. I have FOUR of the hairiest beasts leaving so much hair on my carpet:
Gwen, the basset hound, and Chewy, Pumpkin, and Bella chihuahua/something mixes two with long hair!
Winning this could save my carpet, my life and my vacuum.
August 28th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
I am so excited about this I blogged about it here.

Nilla the 85 pound yellow lab needs a good brushing!
August 28th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Out lab/husky mix, Buzz, could definitely use this.
August 28th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
If I won this, I would give it to my parents because their beagle/basset hound mix sheds like crazy! Every time I’m at their house I end up cleaning up hair - and no one is allowed to pet her inside the house for more than a minute because she sheds so badly.

August 28th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
I would love to win to use it on my dog who is rat terrier mix, named Homer, who sheds like there is no tomorrow.
August 28th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
This would be perfect for our cat Annie, who has medium length, very fluffy hair. We rescued her from the animal shelter, so we have no idea what breed she is, though she doesn’t look like a purebred anything…just a regular housecat, but we love her anyway. Spring is the worst time of year for her around our house, because as she walks, “kitten” balls of fur just fluff off of her all over the place. We always say that she sheds enough to make a whole new cat. This tool would be perfect to help keep her hair clumps under control.
August 28th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
My girlfriend told me about this contest and lordie do we need one of these. We share two dogs, they were hers first but I have officially adopted them. I call them my kids and they try like heck to call me daddy. Their names are Bayles and Bleu (yes that is french). They are both rescues by their mom. and mixed breeds, no real clue what either of them are, but they shed like the dickens. we could vacuum non-stop and it wouldn’t matter. Karissa was told by a “animal reader that bayles was an Indian in past life and that is why she hates to be brushed and get her picture taken….” whadda ya think?
purty please? pick us? we are drowning in dog hair?
August 28th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Oh my I have been covetting one of these for a while.
I don’t know who I’d attack first!
Obi, my 100lb White German Shepherd; Inca the 70lb B&T German Shepherd; or Meaty the 10lb Evil long hair tortie cat. Between the three of them shedding (GSDs shed year round you know) my house is one big fur ball.
Help me!
Thanks for the chance to win!
Lesha
(and Obi, Inca, and Evil Cat)
August 28th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
We would use this on all three of our cats: Hallie, Owen, and Zoe. Hallie and Zoe especially, because they are medium-haired and we’re getting close to BIG SHED time.
August 28th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
I need this brush! I have 2 long-haired cats, Astro and Rosie. I just found a knot in Rosie’s fur and I can’t get it out!
August 28th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Furminator would be great for
Ernie my striped cat about 10lbs. he’s a big boy.
Daisie my chihuahua 7lbs.
Davis my chihuahua 5lbs.
all leave hair everywhere
August 28th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
This would be great for both my mutts, “PerfectPup” and “BigGaloot” (that’s their blogonyms).
Click the “pets” tag on my blog to see some photos / video of them “blowing their coats” and you’ll understand why we need one!

I would use this for our yellow lab named Goldie. I have to vacuum every single day to get all of the hair off our area rugs. As soon as I vacuum she stands on the rug and shakes, showering hair everywhere. I have tried brushing, and there seems to be no end to the hair that she can shed, even with the brushing. I’m sold. If I don’t win this we will be buying one soon.

I would be THRILLED to win one of these for our large-sized Blue Heeler dog, Roscoe. He has this crazy double coat and I have to keep him shaved most of the year to keep our house cleanish. Honestly, he looks a little silly shaved so being brushed effectively would be way better. Thanks!
August 28th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
My mom’s mixed-breed dog, Sam, NEEDS a FURminator!! He weighs 80 pounds and I think 55 of those pounds are hair! Sam’s coat is so thick that the groomer had to put him in a kennel with 4 fans blowing on him because the hair dryers couldn’t dry him off….
August 28th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
I’d love to win this for my adorable black lab/shepherd (we think) rescue dog- Pro. He’s a great guy but he does leave us quite a lot of fur to clean up
Thanks!
August 28th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
I have a dog named Maggie, she’s a dalmation mix. This would be handy.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
My large white shorthaired cat Garbanzo (Zoey for short) desperately needs to be furminated. If we win, it would be winter in September in our yard with a mountain of white fur floating around.
August 28th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
Oh my goodness! We need this so badly for our Lady MacBeth! She is a mixed breed doggie who sheds like crazy. We will soon have a baby and we don’t want him to be covered in her hair all the time :0 This tool would be wonderful!

I’d use this on my boston terrier/daschund, her name is LoLo and she will be 2 on Sept 5th, so this would be an awesome b-day gift for her! She’s only a medium size dog and although it looks like she doesn’t have much fur she sheds a ton! I’ve seen this product in my vets office but of course I was sceptical that it actually worked. Thanks for leting me know your thoughts on it and thanks for the chance to win it!
August 28th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
We have the smaller one for our German Shepherd Grommit. He sheds his body weight about every 3 days it seems. We made the mistake of FurMinating in the house too, which was, even with the kick-@$$ Dyson Animal, was too much hair.
I wish we had gotten the large one, tackling a big ol’ dog with a tiny brush is tedious.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Oh, miracle of all miracles! The thought of less fur blanketing my house has me all giddy. I would love to try the FURminator on my very black Labrador Retriever, Lady Atticus Black, named for the wise and noble Atticus Finch.
August 28th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
I would love this for my parents’ dog, Sunni. She’s a German Shepherd cross. She was a stray in the area for probably 6 months and nobody could get near her until she had a litter of puppies. She had gotten really skinny and my mom would feed her so she could care for the puppies. She would then actually start approaching my mom for attention and that was it- she’s been my mom’s buddy ever since-8 years now! Sunni is the best, most loyal dog my parents have ever had, but she leaves hair all over. It would be great if my parents could try the Furminator to help control the the hair ‘tumbleweeds’
August 28th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
I have seen commercials for this item but have never wanted to spend the money on it - I would love to win one! I have a big yellow Lab named Luke who is a sweet dog but could use a good brush to stop some of the shedding all over the house. Thanks for the giveaway!
August 28th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
I NEED this for my zoo! LOL!!!
The one who needs it the most is our dog Espn (pronounced “Es-pin”). He’s part Rat Terrier/part Maltese. We refer to him as the “Hairy Rat Dog”. LOL! He’s all hair!!!
We also have four cats… Velcro, Kitty, Padme’ and Anakin. Kitty and Padme’ (our girls) could use this. They get mats a lot for some odd reason. Velcro whom we refer to as “speed bump” LOVES! LOVES! LOVES to get brushed.
With all the dog and cat hair we have at home even our couch needs this! LOL!!!
Thank you for a very handy giveaway!

I would love to have this lovely device to use for grooming Gretta. I inherited Gretta from my daughter. She is a Chow mix rescued from living under a deserted trailer on a reservation in Arizona. She had dug a hole under the trailer for herself and her brother to try and stay cool in the desert. She is the sweetest dog with such a gentle soul and crazy amounts of fur! We need a FURminator!
August 28th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Hi,
I would love to use this on my 3 dogs Molly, Hannah, Oscar , and my cat Jinx. With all my animals, and if I sweep less than 4 times a day, my house is covered in fur–especially in the Summer…it’s worse!
Thanks
Jamie
August 28th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
It’s so funny that I just saw the poster before me also has a dog named Hannah and a cat named Jinx! Besides Hannah my German Shepherd that I would like to win the FURminator for, I also have Jinx, as well as my other two cats Lucky and Peanut.

I have a big black 15 lb. cat named Ellie Belle that is a walking hairball. I really need one of these! We also have two other furbags — uh cats — named Hagar and Sassy who are smaller, but still in need of one almost as much as Ellie Belle.

I have three cats. The worst offender, as far as shedding and hacking up furballs, is named Mo. He’s a long haired no-brand cat, weighs about 14 lbs. He loves to be brushed!

We’ve got two dogs, both rescued from the shelter. Chloe is a rotti/boxer mix, and Chip is rat-terrier/sheltie mix. I LOVE the Furminator and we already have one, but I would love to win one to gift this Christmas to a friend who recently lost her 10 year old Great Dane and ended up with one of his “accidental” puppies (long story).
Thanks for the great contest.

And y’know…the funniest thing is that I actually blogged about the furminator and how awesome it is back on Wednesday when I got a coupon from Petsmart for $3 off. So I’m commenting again to let you know that I’ve linked to you. Here is the permalink: http://mypreciouspennies.blogspot.com/2008/08/petsmart-3-off-any-furminator.html

I would use this on our black lab dog of whom has been shedding ALOT these past few weeks. Winning one of these deshedding tools would be a blessing

My cat sebastien could use this. Though he’s not the biggest fan of getting brushed, he knows to suck it up if he wants dinner. I’m pretty sure he’s Russian Blue, but I rescued him so I’m not 100% sure.

It would be for my two orange furball cats, Scruffy (named by 5yr old dd) and Indiana (because my dh REALLY wanted to name our dd Indiana - better name for a cat, I should think)
Thanks!

I want to win a FURminator to use on my 20 lb miniature Lab named James.

I would so love to win this. We have 2 big hairy dogs that shed like it’s their job. We have Shadow, a St. Bernard mix and Toby a Chow mix. Every day I sweep the floor at least twice because of all the fur. This would be awesome!

I would use this on both my dogs, one is an 80 pound walker coonhound mix named Sugar. The other is a 30 pound beagle mix named Molly. They are our babies!
Sugar sheds so badly that i have to sweep and vaccum every single day, so i could really use this tool!

If I win this it would be for my 60 lb Golden Retreiver Maggie. I would love to quit finding clogs of hair in every corner!

I would love to win this for my dog Ruby. She is a mixed breed dog. We got her from a shelter but they thought she was part lab. She has very bad allergies, so this would definetly help get rid of some of the hair that itches so much.

I would love to win this product for our 4 pets! I have a black and white cat named Fluffy, a siamese cat named Figaro, a 25lb Cocker Spanial named Godiva and a huge black lab named Stella. They are all furry and could definitely use some de-fuzzing!!

I would LOVE one of these for my cat, Norm. She’s a medium hair cat, but somehow manages to shed enough for at least two long hairs. I don’t know how she does it, but I sure would like it to stop.
