Help a new mom out - Does she need a mobile?
My sister-in-law Jenny (not the Jenny injured by fireworks) is expecting her first baby and asked a question in the comments of this post: A Great New Site: Newbaby.com and I thought I’d turn it into its own post so that all the other great moms out there can help her out.
Here is her question:
I have a question for all the experienced mommies out there. I was talking to Kim yesterday and told her that I was in a little funk because Carlos and I registered for some baby things and I didn’t get my first choice bedding because it didn’t have a mobile that matched. I thought that a mobile just sort of went with every baby nursery and that it needed one. However, Jake never slept in his crib and Abby liked her mobile for about 2 weeks and now she likes the things that hang on the inside of the crib that she can press buttons and lights up n stuff. So my question to other moms..is a mobile really necessary?
So what do you think? Is a mobile really necessary? Please vote and explain your answer in a comment if you can!

My opinion is no. From personal experience–I couldn’t find a matching mobile for my son’s theme either, so he just went without one. Baby #2 will be inheriting my son’s crib/theme so no mobile for baby #2 either =).

You really don’t need one. If you decide that you’re baby would enjoy something like that, there are so many things you could use to entertain her. Mobiles are old school.

We didn’t like the mobile that matched the bedding set we picked out so we ended up with one of those musical things that attach to the side of the crib. It also projected images on the ceiling. Emily loved it!

Not to mention, the minute they are old enough, they will do what I did and be plucking the little ol’ wings off the angels on the mobile. Mom said it kept me quiet for an extra long time but it was</bkinda a one time thing.:D

Mine weren’t in the crib for very long when they were awake. We had a couple of Pooh toys that you pulled the bottom and they played songs.

I found that with my son, the mobile over his crib is too distracting for him when he’s going to sleep (he doesn’t play in the crib, just sleeps in it). So I moved it over the changing table and he loves it…maybe a little too much because he squirms and kicks in delight as I’m trying to change him. By the way, my mobile didn’t come with my crib set, but the colors complemented it.

I don’t think it’s necessary to have a mobile that matches the crib bedding, Jorden’s was just a similar motif. Fishies everywhere! We bought the FisherPrice Ocean Wonders one because it had a remote control we hung on his door knob so we could start it up at any time. I love my baby dearly but sometimes all he needed was a little bit of light and music to calm him down, seeing me only reminded him that he was sleeping alone! So we’d turn it on and let it play for a while (while I sat at his door peeking in the 1/4″ opening!) And it was easy to move and sit on his dresser when he was older, we never had problems with him pulling on it for that reason. We used it this way until he was about 15 months old, it was wonderful and if we have more babies anytime soon I’ll buy the same type!
